At the moment (Sunday 9am), I'm hosting a chat until 11 am on the
Spring Day Plaza:
http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/index_spring.cfm
Feel free to drop in at the Plaza, all the Spring teachers are taking turn
to host the chat, and you can meet them directly, and discuss the projects.
This evening, Jean Philippe Raud Dugal will be there around 22:00.
At the same time, there will also be an interesting Euro Language meeting
on Tappedin site. For more information about the Tappedin meeting, contact
Phil benz at : Philip.Benz@ac-grenoble.fr
In this Infonews, discover " A la Une" three websites for teens and
their specific language and references, and "In the News" see how a new
Europe is born and how the papers throughout the world report it. Then, a
special report about the film "bend it like Beckham" and ideas to work from
it in class ( the film has already been released on DVD), some news sites
about Christmas, including ready-made worksheets for all levels and urban
legends about Christmas. In the resources items, find the national
evaluation tool bank, an interactive atlas, and two sites about recipes and
nutrition, some amazing edible crafts for the youngest, and at the end some
teaching practice suggestions, and don't miss the opportunity to register
for a training session in Washington!
I'll be on holidays for the next two weeks, so Infonews n°172 will
come out in January.
Have a nice week, and enjoy your Christmas holidays!

My Kinda Place
-----------------------
http://www.mykindaplace.com
I found this site by chance as I was looking for review of "bend it like
Beckham". This is a site for English teens (and older), and I found the
vocabulary worth a look : so many words and references which didn't make
sense for me..... But it is the way teens talk, and I feel just as
uncomfortable when I listen to a radio for teenagers in France....
and if you go deeper inside the site, you find interesting texts about
teen's problems (drinking, becoming a model, teen pregnancy, etc.)
http://www.mykindaplace.com/life/reallife.asp
and also informations about the latest teen fashion (style or vile? Freak
or chic?):
http://www.mykindaplace.com/fashion/stylefiles.asp

You will find the same kind of reports and infos for teens and the same
type of graphics
on CBBC News:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/
and on MTV for the UK:

It seems to be what teens like! (and what we have to discover...;)

What is it about?
--------------------------
""Bend It Like Beckham" interweaves the underdog theme of Billy Elliot with
Indian coming-of-age films like "East is East" and Monsoon Wedding, adding
a healthy dose of MTV flavour in the appropriate spots."
from Film Threat : http://www.filmthreat.com/Reviews.asp?Id=3634
Here's the official synopsis from Fox Searchlight:
"A kaleidoscope of color and culture clash humorously as an Indian family
in London tries to raise their soccer-playing daughter in a traditional
way. Unlike tarty elder sister, Pinky, who is preparing for an Indian
wedding and a lifetime of cooking the perfect chapatti, Jess' dream is to
play soccer professionally like her hero David Beckham. Wholeheartedly
against Jess' unorthodox ambition, her parents eventually reveal that their
reservations have more to do with protecting her than with holding her
back. When Jess is forced to make a choice between tradition and her
beloved sport, her family must decide whether to let her chase her
dream...and a soccer ball."

Boggle's World (December Busy Educator's Newsletter)
--------------------------
http://bogglesworld.com
Boggle's World is a resource site for language arts and ESL teachers. The site
contains free worksheets, crosswords, word searches, and flashcards to
download print and photocopy. There are also lesson plans and articles with a
mix of theory and practice. The materials are created by teachers and have all
been tested in classroom situations.

Animated Atlas (from The Scout Report -- December 13)
--------------------------
http://www.animatedatlas.com
A commercial site, Animated Atlas provides excellent audio-visual resources
for teachers and students of European and American history. The resources
combine maps and animation to create short video presentations on such
subjects as the growth of the United States and the First World War. Though
most of the videos must be ordered, the site provides free samples of its
presentations, including a ten minute presentation on the westward expansion
of the United States, the early history of the American Revolution, the
European alliances before the First World War, and the beginnings of the
Mexican American War. The site provides a timeline of American history that
can be referred to during the American expansion video. Students and
educators should also explore the site's listings of American history sites
and primary source on the Web. [CH]
[ ideal for working on comparative structures, from lower secondary school
onward.]

Feeding America: The Historic American Cookbook Project (from The Scout
Report -- December 13)
--------------------------
http://digital.lib.msu.edu/cookbooks/
The Michigan State University Library, in partnership with the MSU Museum,
have created a fascinating look into American epicurean history with their
online trove of influential 19th and early 20th century American cookbooks.
Currently, the archive includes page images from 33 cookbooks, and when the
project is completed in September 2003, the site will include page images
and full-text transcriptions for 75 cookbooks. Visitors to the site will
find an excellent introduction to the cookbooks in an introductory essay
written by Jan Longone, a curator of American culinary history at the
University of Michigan. The cookbooks on the site are divided into topical
areas, such as regional, ethnic, and general cookery. Equally helpful is the
ability to search the entire cookbook collection by author's name, title,
and the complete text. The site concludes with a glossary that explains
different terms used in these historic cookbooks, such as pippin and codlin
(both types of apples). [KMG]

Lessons tailored to the learner, not the teacher (from PEN Weekly NewsBlast
for December 13)
--------------------------
Federal law requires schools to create individualized education plans
(IEPs) for special-education students, but says nothing about everyone
else. Schools in Maryland, Vermont and Virginia, among other states, have
adopted these personalized plans for regular-education students. The idea
has gained so much momentum that Washington state schools Superintendent
Terry Bergeson recently suggested creating "accelerated learning plans"
statewide for seventh-graders who don't pass the Washington Assessment of
Student Learning. The learning plans, which basically involve getting
parents, teacher and student to draw up a list of goals and ways to reach
them, have yielded numerous benefits. Parents say they feel like they're
"part of the solution." Administrators say the plans are effective
communication tools, building bridges between school and home. The plans
are notorious for devouring special-education teachers' time. For most
teachers, the problem is not the concept of an "individualized education."
It's that managing a batch of education plans can seem like a second job.
"It's more work for the teachers," said Principal Benjamin Wright. "But
that's too bad. In the long run it's best for the kids."
