A la Une : MPR Sound Learning
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Sound Learning is a launching point to Minnesota Public Radio's content on
the Web. This site is designed exclusively for teachers to access timely
text and audio clips for use in the classroom.
An integral part of this site are the instructional strategies in
English/Language Arts, Social Studies, Music, and Family and Consumer
Science, plus a technical guide to accessing audio on MPR Web sites,
strategies for teaching reading comprehension, and tips on using the
Internet for different classroom setups." (from the site)
http://www.soundlearning.org/
you can register for a free printed guide, or see the programs from which
to choose:
Monthly features
-------------------
You can also access their monthly feature, there are three so far.
- November about the Korean war : "Korea, the forgotten war".
- December, about spirituals : "the Legacy of the African-American
Spiritual" a subject which you can use now, since January is Black History
month. The full text is not online, but you can listen it as a whole or in
excerpts between 5 and 15 minutes long, and access to listening
comprehension questions and useful addresses to study the subject in depth.
- January about obesity : "The fight against fat"
http://news.mpr.org/projects/2003/06/obesity/
for advanced students, an excellent, very comprehensive site. You can read
and hear articles, in clear American voices, you can test your knowledge
and determine your weight wellness profile, reflect about weight
discrimination and access to many other articles to learn everything about
the subject.
Teachers' aids
-------------------
http://www.soundlearning.org/features/2004/01/exercises.shtml#listening
Sound learning provides you with a page of exercices in several categories:
reading comprehension
listening comprehension
critical thinking
research challenge
and you can also access at the end of the page a list of the essential
vocabulary in each article. (without definitions)
Vocabulary
----------------
In"The fight against fat", discover the word "bariatrics" : this word
is
not in the Webster. I found this definition on a site about obesity:
"Bariatric medicine is the medically-supervised treatment of obesity and
its associated conditions. In 1985, the National Institutes of Health, at
its Health Consensus Development Conference on the Health Implications of
Obesity, stated that obesity is a specific disease entity that should be
treated and monitored medically by a trained physician."
http://www.carolinaantiagingandweightcontrolclinic.com/Bariatrics.ivnu
and this in Wordsmith
"bariatrics (bar-ee-A-triks) noun A branch of medicine concerned with
obesity."
Political ads
Ad watch campaign 2002 in Minnesota
"MPR's Laura McCallum and Mark Zdechlik with Professor Ronald J. Faber of
the University of Minnesota review this year's election advertising. Watch
for additions to the series through the fall campaigns. Our 2000, 1998 and
1996 campaign advertising feature includes some historically significant
ads that remain available." (from the site)
http://news.mpr.org/collections/campaign2002/adwatch/index.shtml
[political videos, to show the students what it's like and how they manage
to convey their message.]
Football and ads
-------------------
See all those ads with your students' favourite footballers like Beckham:
http://www.pepsi-football.co.uk/advert.asp
excellent to complete a unit about football....
Pub TV (from Isabelle Bouvet and Alain Krizic on e-teach)
-------------------
This site is in French, but the videos are in the local language. You can
find ads in English in the UK, USA, Australia and NZ sections.
Note : this site is for teachers to download from, not for students. Some
ads are for adults only.
Ads to download ( (from Isabelle Bouvet on e-teach)
-------------------
http://www.absolutelyandy.com/tvadverts/
Lots of ads in Windows media player and some in Real Player, compiled by
Andy Savage, who seems to especially enjoy funny ads with good music. You
could use some of them in class, especially those with surprising ending.
This site hosts several TV ads in Quick Time, but since it doesn't work on
my computer, I can't tell you what they are worth....;)
Resources for secondary school
Billy Eliott (from e-teach)
-------------------
If you feel like working on the film "Billy Elliott", here are some
excellent pages created by our colleagues Alain Krizic and Josiane Laval,
and tested in their classes:
http://www.ac-nancy-metz.fr/enseign/languesLP/anglais/billy_elliot.htm
MLK Day and Civil Rights
-------------------
MLK Day is tomorrow!
Many resources were given in Infonews n°203. Here is one more, found by
Brigitte Cadaureille on e-teach: the site of the Civil Rights:
http://www.civilrights.org/campaigns/mlk/
and your students may even enter the contest:
Westward Ho!
-------------------
http://www.cyberbee.com/wwho/
Pack up the Prairie Schooner! This virtual 2,000-mile journey from
Independence, Missouri to Willamette Valley, Oregon embarks January 20 and
ends February 20. Collaborative "classroom families" make decisions about
traveling the trail using scenarios developed by project moderators.
Listening To the Walls Talk
-------------------
http://www.millennium.scps.k12.fl.us/overviewwalls.html
This project has an open enrollment. The links to the project Web pages are
due by March 15, 2004. The time for completion is up to the particular
teacher. Each class will submit a group project as a Web page about the
story of their neighborhood, complete with pictures, maps and diagrams.
My Hero
------------
http://www.myhero.com/myhero/
This remarkable ongoing Web project will inspire people of all ages. Read
an archive of hero stories from around the world. Then, honor a hero by
sharing how he or she has made a difference in your community. (Martin
Luther King, Jr. is featured this month.)
