A la Une this week, lots of sites and activities for Earth Day
2004, which will take place on April 22nd. Even if you are on holidays, you
can choose to work on this topic later in the year. And for holiday spirit,
try the games and interactive pages, and especially "hog buster"!
Then discover everything about Tamil New year ( it's today!), some
handicrafts for primary school, and some site for secondary school,
especially sites presenting news for kids, and three articles about
education in the US, including a page to find articles on any educational
subject you may be interested in.
Next week, I'll start my holidays, so Infonews n°214 will be
published on May 2nd.
Until then, enjoy your holidays!

A la Une : Earth Day 2004
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Although several dates are suggested by different websites, the majority
seems to agree on April 22nd. Many communities in the US have extended it
to the next week-end, and some groups would like the date of the equinox
and spring( March 21). Anyway, Earth Day doesn't seem to be an important
day in France, and it wasn't even mentioned in the national news last year.
So here are some sites to work from, but feel free to celebrate it or just
talk about it whenever you like....
Here is the page I designed for my students to work from
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/infonews/themes/earthday.htm
It is just a page of links, from which they discover what Earth Day is,
which activities are organised where, what the problems are, what solutions
can be worked out and what they can do themselves (save energy, be
environment friendly, recycle, sort, etc.)
Earth Day Posters to download
--------------
- Activities to celebrate Earth Day in your classroom
http://www.environment.ky.gov/earthday/classroom/default.htm
[ suggestions of activities for primary school, intermediate school, middle
school and high school.]
- Earth day links from Education World (WebQuest, activities, articles, etc.)
- A week of Earth Day activities ( from Riverdeep's Classroom Flyer,
Friday, April 2nd)
http://www.greenteacher.com//articles/earthweek.html
"On Monday, try experimenting with and discussing water issues, such as
weather and the role of water, hydro-electric power, or fish and
environmental issues. On Tuesday you'll be investigating the element of
fire, including mythology, music, cooking, etc. Learning themes cover each
of the elements, with the Earth on Wednesday and Air on Thursday, all with
creative suggestions for learning across the curriculum."
- Peace Bell on Earth Day, from CyberSchoolBus
http://cyberschoolbus.un.org/earthday/peacebell_2004.asp
- Planet Pals teachers' Challenge( from Riverdeep's Classroom Flyer,
Friday, April 2nd)
http://www.planetpals.com/teacherschallenge.html
"In this Earth Day-friendly site, teachers are encouraged to start a
recycling program with their students, for either their own class or the
school as a whole. While quite simple to institute, this kind of recycling
program can create responsible, active students, who will be quite proud of
their results and accomplishments. Several extension ideas make the project
exciting, and a Teacher Packet with stickers, certificates, and classroom
posters is included."
- Resources from Canada : lots of ready to use resources to plan an event
for earth day, plus a trivia, a fact sheet and a reuse guide
http://www.ecokids.ca/pub/index.cfm
element in the room you get an explanation, and when you find the hog you
can access a game (memory, shoot them up, etc.), a scavenger hunt, and
pages of facts and advices.
http://www.energyhog.org/
[ visual, easy and interactive, it is a good way to encourage students to
discover how they waste energy. But some of the games can be problems in
the computer room, so restrict their use, or invite the students to do them
outside teaching time.]
communities are doing to improve their environmental records."
ABC books are a tool for all grades. For primary-grade students, writing
ABC books reinforces many language skills. At the elementary level, writing
ABC books develops research skills. Older students can create ABC books for
young students -- and then share the results.
