Infonews n°223 du 17/09/2004

A la Une, follow Bob in his day by day fight to quit smoking, and
send your students in his steps. The News are rich this week : the
Paralympic Games started last week, tomorrow is International Car-Free Day
and the Hurricanes keep devastating the West Indies and Florida. If you
want to work with your colleague who teaches history in première, you will
find these sites about workhouses and Oliver Twist very useful. Then find
several resources for primary school : a day in a British school,
interactive sites, and various ideas of activities; several online
magazines; and various resources for secondary school. At the end of this
newsletter, find all the French national English teaching programs, and a
painting exhibition in French.
Have a nice week!

A la Une: Bob Quit

BobQuits.com ( from The Scout Report -- September 17)

http://www.bobquits.com/
In recent years, the efforts by various government agencies and
not-for-profit foundations to get people to quit smoking has increased
dramatically. Many organizations have turned to emerging forms of media,
such as Internet-based productions, to get the word out about the
individual experiences of those persons trying to quit the nicotine habit.
In this rather informative outreach program, visitors can explore the life
of one New York resident as he attempts to give up smoking. The program
highlights the affect his decision has on his family, particularly his
children. Visitors can browse through the video segments offered here, and
skip around at their leisure.
Overall, the site is an emotional and informative experience that may prove
to be a helpful educational resource as well as providing a first-hand
account of one individual's experience with giving up smoking. [KMG]
[ The introduction with a video looking like an advertisement is excellent,
and can be easily used with beginners or learners at any level. They will
all feel like saying something! The rest of the site is also very visual,
with video in Flash, and a journal to read. You go through Bob's life day
by day, and observe his fight to manage and quit smoking. The students will
like it because it has a reality TV side and shows the real life of a young
American.]

"The Task : You are going to develop a business plan. In the business
plan, you must decide if your business is going to sell a mega product or
provide a service. Other factors you must consider are your competitors,
financing your venture, and a competitive price. The business plan must be
well organized, be easy to read, and follow a logical format. The sample
format for a business plan has seven parts: Company Description, Products
and Services Plan, Marketing Plan, Legal Plan, Management Plan, Operating
Plan, Financial Plan.
The final product will be in the form of a portfolio (using a word
processor), Power Point presentation, or a Web page."
