Middle School fashion bullying (from MiddleWeb's "Of Particular Interest")
"Aryana McPike, a sixth-grader from Springfield,
Ill., has a closet full of designer clothes,"
begins a recent story in the Wall Street Journal.
http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB119326834963770540.html?mod=dist_smartbrief
"But her wardrobe, carefully selected by a
fashion-conscious mother, hasn't won her friends
at school. Kids in her class recently instructed
her that she was wearing the wrong brands." The
story quotes guidance counselors and
psychologists who say that fashion bullying is
"reaching a new level of intensity as more
designers launch collections targeted at kids."
As a result, an increasing number of school and
community programs that address girl-on-girl
bullying are recognizing the sizable role
clothing plays in girls' identity and ensuing
peer pressure. Read this blog for an interesting
take on this story from a middle school FACS teacher:

Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Buy Nothing Day : November 22nd and 23rd
Thanksgiving is on November 23rd, see the special section below.
Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving, a
day when traditionally everybody in the US goes
shopping : there are special prices, discounts
and sales on that day. It is also the first day
of the Christmas shopping season. Some say that
it is called black Friday because it was the
first good day for retailers, so they were no
longer in the red at the bank, but back in the
black, some others that it is because of the giant traffic jams on that day.

Buy Nothing Day has been invented by the Culture
Jammers de Adbusters, who fight consumerism and
capitalist behaviour which will eventually lead
our planet and our children to destruction. You
have certainly already used adbusters' spoof adds
( against smoking and alcohol), you may also know
their campaign against excessive TV watching (No
TV Day), here is Buy Nothign Day, to react against Black Friday.
