Ordinary An Ordinary of the Arms in the database of Early Rolls

I would be grateful to receive photographs of civic heraldry, pub signs, heraldic cards, and anything else which you feel might add to the site. I would of course place a note of provenance against any material used.

Searching the Site

Although there are no specific built in facilities available for searching the site, it is nevertheless possible to do so.
The easiest way is to use, for example, Google or Alta Vista.
Each of these provides a toolbar which can be placed on your home page. When the toolbar is present access www.briantimms.com
When on the site, type the word or phrase you want to find in the window on the toolbar, and press the THIS SITE button.
The results are usually very good.

Studies in Heraldry

The site has become large and wide ranging, and perhaps difficult to navigate. This site map is designed to show what is present, and to provide easy links to the desired pages.

At present, the site contains 468 pages, some which are very large, and may take some time to load.

Overview

Home Page
This is the heart of the site. Place the cursor on an icon to go to the page required. For regular visitors, perhaps the New page is the most important. The site is updated on a weekly basis, and details are placed in the New page, with the appropriate links.

Early Rolls of Arms
Database
The source of my work on Rolls of Arms of the late thirteenth century is a database of more than 4000 individual bearers. As I have built this, I have published groups of fifty at weekly intervals. For the time being, until I begin work on a new roll, it is complete. The images in the database are small, but larger versions are found on the pages relating to the individual rolls.

The best way to look at the database is to go to Early Rolls of Arms, where each group is shown, along with details of the English and European rolls which have been completed so far.
There is also a page on which all arms in the database are listed, in order of their blazon, and with references to the Rolls in which they appear.
This page is gradually being replaced by a more sophisticated Ordinary of the arms

The Civic Heraldry of France
Written originally in book form, the work comprises 2400 pages of typescript. Here, each Chapter forms a single page, some of which are very long and can take a long time to access. I have begun to illustrate the work, and occasionally make additions.

The pages are of images of English pub signs from different sources arranged into generally heraldic themes. So far the main sources are photographs and the Whitbread series of trade cards.
