A World of Fantasy
Origins of Melmiriel
The elven language is usually reserved to the initiated, but for those
who know JRR Tolkien and his characters all along his "Lord of the Ring"and his various stories", it's inside THE SILMARILLION
that we shall find the origins of my "nick" here.
- The prefix "MEL" which means "LOVE" can be noticed in Melian
(got from Melyanna, meaning: "very precious gift".
The root of the word can also be found in the SINDARIN word :
"mellon" (friend).Ref: the inscription on the west portal of Moria.
- As for "MIRIEL", Tolkien tells us, still in THE SILMARILLION, that
"MIR" means "JEWEL" (in Quenya "mire") as in Elemnire, Gwaith-Mirdain,
MIRIEL, Nauglamir, Tar-Atanamir.( NOTE that the suffix "IEL" is typically
elfish too! )
° All those Elven "words" and lexics can also be found in the bright
analysis made by the President of the FEE ( Federation des Etudes
Elfiques) Mr Edouard Kloczko, in his quite recent work:
DICTIONNAIRE DES LANGUES ELFIQUES.
° I'll end my "presentation" with a short poem found in Book II,
Chapter 1 of the Lord of The Ring, MANY MEETINGS, (an elven song
of course ;-)
***Quotes***
" As Bilbo, Frodo, Aragorn and Lady Arwen passed out of
the Hall of Fire, a single clear voice rose in song.
It went thus (Sindarin or Grey-Elven) :
" A Elbereth Gilthoniel,
silivren penna míriel
o menel aglar elenath!
Na-chaered palan-díriel
o galadhremmin ennorath
Fanuilos le linnathon
nel aer, sí nef aearon!"
***english translation by Tolkien
in "The road goes on and on"***
"O Elbereth Star-kindler, (white) glittering slants-down
sparkling like jewels from firmament glory (of) the star-host
to-remonte distance after-having-gazed from
tree-tangeled middle-lands, Fanuilos, to thee I will chant
on this side of ocean, here on this side of the Great Ocean
"
To his surprise, Frodo saw that Aragorn's dark cloak was throwned back,
and he semmed to be clad in elven-mail, and a star shone on his breast.
Frodo stood still enchanted, while the sweet syllables of the
elvish song fell like clear jewels of blenched words and melody.
"It is a song to Elbereth" said Bilbo! They will sing that and other
songs of the Blessed Realm many times tonight."
