internet to find the meaning of a word, accronym or expression.

FIFA World Cup
-----------------------
the World Cup starts at the end of the month. Here are some webistes that
could be useful to follow the event and learn about Japan and Korea.
World Tournament
http://www.worldcuptournament.co.uk
this site from Football league Premium TV, features all the details about
the calendar, the teams, the players, and the matches. You'll find there
also audio recordings of some players and the audio reports of the matches.
Also available, some games (the most interesting are paying) and a
sweepstake, complete with the rules of the game and the cards to print.
If you want to work on this site with beginners (lower secondary school or
even primary school). Our colleague Yves Gouast has prepared this very easy
worksheet :
http://yves.gouast.free.fr/worldcup/worksheet.doc
[ Daren Rigby on e-teach has sent these informations about the vocabulary
of the sweepstake. On the cards, you can see informations about the
predictions of success of the teams. Here it is:
"in with a shout" : "have a small chance..."
"pants" : "crap"
"dark horses " : "unknown quantity, may well cause a surprise"
whereas
"outsiders" : "not tipped to be in among the prizes, very little
chance"
Thanks, Darren! ]
World Cup 2002
http://www.worldcup-2002.co.uk/
this other address contains mostly figures and results and is much less
interesting.
( note in those two sites the use of "team" for the group of players who
will play, and "squad" for the complete group (including those who will not
play) ).
World Cup Archive
http://www.worldcuparchive.com/
( from Claude Covo-Farchi on e-teach)
on this site you'll find :
- in "the nations" : guides to all the countries in competition.
- in "legends" the bios of the most famous players.
- in "mascots" all the past mascots (France's looks best!)
- in "quizzes" three levels of 10 multiple choice questions.
FIFA
http://www.fifa.com/
First consider this acronym : is it a strange mixture of French and
English, or an unusual order of French words to make the accronym sound better?
FIFA = Fédération Internationale de Football Association
Did you know that FIFA headquarters have been in Zurich (Switzerland) since
1927?
see :
http://www.fifa2.com/scripts/runisa.dll?M2:gp:514036:67173+futuro/eduprog/9700/gp-fifaorg
you'll also find on this page useful charts of the organisation (pour STT
et BTS tertiaires)
on the site you'll find :
- the history of the FIFA ,fact sheets, surveys, and a history of the game
- FIFA development work, including the unescapable Quality concept (yes,
even in Football!!!)
- in "regulation" don't miss the page about doping ( 30 pages in .pdf)
- in "law of the game" you'll find the latest regulation and the referee
signals in english, french, spanish and german.(.pdf)
- very short milestones ( from 1580 till 1997) and the details of the
amendments
http://www.fifa.com/refs/laws/milestones/index_E.html
- the complete rules of futsal, indoor foofball
http://www.fifa.com/futsal/laws/2000/index_E.html
- best player of the year :
http://www.fifa.com/events/playergala/index_E_2001.html
on this page I also found mention of:
"A teenage Ghanaian player, Sumaila Abdallah, will receive a FIFA Fair Play
diploma for having saved the life of an opponent with the kiss of life when
the latter was knocked unconscious in a local match in Ghana. "
- and don't forget to visit the fair play page
http://www.fifa.com/fifa/fairplay/fairplayday98.html
it is a bit old, but you'll find the code of conduct and the history.
Fifa World Cup
http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/en/e/
on this other site, you can see the mascot, hear the official music
JAWOC
http://www.jawoc.or.jp/e/index.html
official Japanese website for the event. You'll find there:
- the rules for the spectators : see the prohibited items!
- the latest news
- the tips to find an accommodation.
World Cup Japan Korea
http://www.worldcupjapankorea.com/
on this site I liked :
- the "media" pages. You'll see there all the mascots of the World Cups....
http://www.worldcupjapankorea.com/pictures1/mascots.htm
- the world cup history
http://www.worldcupjapankorea.com/news/fifa_world_cup_history.htm
BBC
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport3/worldcup2002/default.stm
the BBC page. Don't miss the complete TV/Radio coverage!
you'll also find there the best pages about each team, with articles,
interviews and videos.
CNN
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/world/2002/world_cup/
the CNN page. Articles and interviews. At the moment, less interesting than
the BBC Site.
Staying in Japan
-------------------------
Hotels
http://www.fifa-hotels.com
links towards the hotels in all the match locations. You'll see the
stadiums, the places of interest in the towns and the complete descriptions
of the hotel facilities. There are no more accommodations available now,
but you didn't plan to really go there, did you?
Japan National Tourist Information
http://www.jnto.go.jp
You'll find there how to get around, places to visit, tourist guide,
including a list of places for Cherry Blossom wieving
http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/JN/seasons/index.html
and a site about Eating Out
http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/EO/
including :
- Japanese cuisine (with pictures)
- where to dine (with interesting cultural explanations)
- a short and easy "how to eat" about the correct use of chopsticks
- and a drinking etiquette, which invites you to share your bottle of beer
with the people around you, and start a conversation, since "even small
talk in broken English, with the aid of body language, can be very
enjoyable" !!!!
Espn Soccer
http://worldcup.espnsoccernet.com/story?id=211475&lang=en
"Sa-kka's coming home" is an article by an englishman living in Japan, who
tries to measure the impact and the possible consequences of the meeting of
different cultures.
life in Korea
-----------------
http://www.lifeinkorea.com/worldcup.cfm
on this site, you'll find very little about the World Cup, but interesting
infos about Korea, although conversely to the above ones, it is american.
-what to see (with a map, and special entries for bouddhist temples,
wildlife parks...and football venue! :
http://www.lifeinkorea.com/Travel2/
- what to eat (with photos)
http://www.lifeinkorea.com/cgi-bin/menu.cfm
- interesting pages about traditional drinks
http://www.lifeinkorea.com/culture/alcohol/alcohol.cfm
- and the drinking etiquette, even more complicated than the Japanese
one..and don't forget to bow!
http://www.lifeinkorea.com/culture/alcohol/alcohol.cfm?Subject=etiquet
other sites
---------------
Soccerphile
http://www.soccerphile.com
this site is not to be used at school, but teachers and students can be
interested in:
the page about betting, with instant tax-free betting :
http://www.soccerphile.com/html/be/be.html
(choose your broker)
and a page about love hotels in Japan, describing the way they work and
saying that it can also be used as a hotel, since they are cheaper (but
once you go out, you have to pay again to go back in!)

Teach it!
-------------
www.teachit.co.uk
have launched their new site . They now have a search engine!
great to find the right worksheet... have a go at advert, newspaper...
you'll be pleased with the result....well I was! (from annie Gwynn)
http://www.teachit.co.uk/index.asp?online=1#spelbank
[ I also liked their pages about Shakespeare, beginning with a very free
webquest :
http://www.teachit.co.uk/online/shakey1.asp
just go through all those resources, and I'm sure you'll find something
useful.]
Vietnam Passage: Journeys from War to Peace (LII> [LIIWEEK] May 23, 2002)
----------------------------
Tells the stories of six Vietnamese people and an American
journalist: their connection to the Vietnam War and their lives
since. Also has a lot of information about Saigon (now Ho
Chi Minh City), tourism in contemporary Vietnam, a
teacher's guide, and links to other resources. Companion site
to a PBS documentary of the same title.

Geography4Kids! (EduHound Weekly for May 23)
----------------------------
http://www.geography4kids.com/
[ Definitely too difficult for kids! but these interesting documents could
be used for a trans disciplinary work on the causes of pollution for
example, or anything of that type doing with earth sciences, biology or
physics. You will find there explanations for biosphere, environmental
chemistry, or quantas and thermodynamics. The English is simple, it is the
concept behind that is more difficult!

Geo-Globe: Interactive Geography! (EduHound Weekly for May 23)
----------------------------
http://library.thinkquest.org/10157/
[ six interesting interactive games, for a group of beginners from last
form of primary school or lower secondary school. Each game consists in
questions, sometimes with hints, and the students have to find the answer.
I tried the first two :
Geo-find is a multiple choice question about geography, and when you choose
the right answer, you get links to this place and you can check your answer
and learn more.
Geo-quest is a questionnaire about an animal. You click on the questions,
you use a dictionary to understand the answers, and then you try and
suggest an answer. If you don't find it after asking all the questions, the
game gives you the answer. My animal was an "aardvark"...so I had to search
the internet, using the right key words and browsing through the answers to
find out what it looked like....
These games could be an excellent group work activity for the end of the
year...
[ ps : an "aardvark" , c'est un fourmilier, mais je ne l'ai pas trouvé dans
mon dictionnaire!!!]

Cadre Commun de Référence/ Common European Framework of Reference
----------------------------
http://www.crdp.ac-caen.fr/crdp/portfolio.htm
or a Word file, in English and French (and Polish!) of the same thing
http://culture2.coe.int/portfolio/inc.asp?L=E&M=$t/208-1-0-1/main_pages/../portfolios/../&L=E&M=$t/208-1-0-1/main_pages/levels.html
from this page, you can also download Word files of self assessment grids
in 14 languages. These grids correspond to the European Language Portfolio.
If you want to work with it but can't afford to by one for each student,
then you can use those pages instead. They look less nice, but are still
very useful!

Google Labs (from LII> [LIIWEEK] May 23, 2002)
----------------------------
This experimental site from the Google search engine
"showcases a few of our favorite ideas that aren't quite ready
for prime time." Play with keyboard shortcuts, telephone
searching, a glossary (thesaurus), and more.
http://labs.google.com/
[ I tried the dictionary ( http://labs.google.com/glossary
) with the
difficult accronym "PHAT" : it found it, which is already better than the
Webster ( http://www.m-w.com ) but if it
gave the meaning (good, nice,
interesting) it didn't explain the accronym. So there remains the only way
to know it from natives : Ask Jeeves ( http://www.askjeeves.com
) . You ask
a question, and people reply on a forum.
I asked what PHAT meant last year and got an answer : it is still in the
archives at
http://answerpoint.ask.com/qa/threadshow.cfm?mb=8902698511987197&msg=43624326&page=1
[ there are may answers actually, they all mean cool, excellent, but they
vary between:
Pretty Hot And Tempting
Positively Hot And Tempting
Pretty Hype And Trendy.....]
