~~~~~~~~ Sommaire ~~~~~~~~
This week, for French teachers, the new pre-curricullum
for la classe de première, and for everyone, some new ideas for Spring Day
which is drawing near ( : it is still time to think about it, register and
organise something! Among the new ideas, you will find simple things to do
with beginners, that you can easily do in primary school, lower secondary
school, or with a very low set of students.
Then some other resources for primary school, which can also be adapted to
other groups of beginners or lower intermediate, some resources for
secondary school, including the new buildings to replace the WTC in NY and
two sites to promote equality for women, then two webquests about
environment, and in teaching practice, you will learn through several sites
and examples, how to use primary sources ( original texts, photos, ads,
maps ) to teach history and social sciences....and you can also adapt it to
language teaching of course! and to end this letter, a special bonus from
our colleague Olivier Colas : a free cdrom in English about Newquay (UK),
and a way to get a free encyclopedia Britannica...if you pay for the
shipping and delivery.
Have a nice week!
First: Remember to register!
------------------------
http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/SpringSite_Register/entry_page.cfm?id_area=514
at the moment, there are 219 French schools registered, which is not much
considering there are 616 Romanian schools, 443 Italian, 284 Greek, and 237
in Poland!!!!!!
http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/SpringSite_Contact/sub_area.cfm?sa=2895
Then, here are some official links (this will help when you talk to it to
your head of school....who has certainly forgotten to forward this
information to you!) :
le texte de présentation officielle du Printemps de l'Europe est enfin
paru! Vous pouvez le consulter à :
vous trouverez ici le concours que l'agence Socrates france organise pour
Spring Day.
And here are ideas of what to do on the 21st of March:
On the French Spring Day website
------------------------
http://apella.ac-limoges.fr/printemps-europe
Jean-Philippe Raud Dugal has built these pages for you. Even if you don't
understand French, don't stop there and visit the other pages who give you
lots of useful adresses for role games, webquests, quizzes and various
activities in English and several other languages.
Also don't miss the page of links to other Spring teachers pages offering
lots of links and ideas:
http://apella.ac-limoges.fr/printemps-europe/activities/autres/lienspring.htm
Online production from pupils
------------------------
http://www.univie.ac.at/Romanistik/Sprachwst/site/spratscher/vbs_myEurope_spring_activities.htm
At this address, you can now find several texts from students who want to
make their voice heard. You can also use those texts to feed your students
reflections, and make them analyse what the others think and why. Your
students can read and enter texts in their own language : at the moment,
German, English, French, italian, Spanish and Catalan are available.
On the Spring Day website
------------------------
http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/SpringSite_Resources/entry_page.cfm?id_area=572
don't miss the new page about the values of Europe:
http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/SpringSite_Resources/sub_area.cfm?sa=3523
And have a look at all the VIP who are going to visit schools on that day :
Luc Ferry did just join in. What school is he going to visit? Maybe it's
yours!!!!!!!! ;)
Then, here are some resources to help you finding ideas dor the 21st of March:
from the Spring Day resource page
------------------------
you can find some useful resources on the 'spring day' website:
http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/fr/SpringSite_Resources/entry_page.cfm?id_area=572
for example:
http://www.timeforcitizenship.com/default/index.asp?intro=tony&t=welcome
http://www.learn.co.uk/yvote/
also try the quizzes : most of them are in English, and all the easy ones
about the countries and their capitals can be excellent for young children
to locate the different countries in enlarged Europe and learn the names of
the capitals.
In general, I would advise primary school teachers to look for resources
based on discovering the countries (geography, cities, food...) and their
languages (how to say hello...), rather than focusing on the European Union
itself, which is a very difficult subject to tackle, even with older
students, and for which there are no easy resources.
from the web
-------------------
you can also use this american webquest:
http://www.grand-blanc.k12.mi.us/Get-It-Project/Dolby/
you can also find this page of flags and activities very useful:
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/geography/flags/europe.shtml
and the BBC website also offers easy activities for young children to
discover other languages:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/languages/
also to learn basic words (like hello!) in several languages:
http://www.ipl.org/div/kidspace/hello/
(with sound)
http://www.public.asu.edu/~sshetty/Hello%20in%20diff%20languages.htm
(without sound)
http://www.elite.net/~runner/jennifers/
(just hints of pronunciation)
I hope these few hints will help you organise something for Spring Day. You
can also, on the school level, organise other activities like:
- a European meal ( made of typical food like cole slow , goulash and
crèpes.... I'm not sure it will really taste good together, but it is just
an idea...;)
- a European costumes contest (made out of paper, drawn from pictures found
in encyclopedia or on the net
- a logo for Europe contest
- a motto for Europe contest (or what is Europe for you...)
- a song for Europe (there is the official anthem, but young people may
invent something younger...)
- an exhibition of : newspapers, postcards, drawings, collages, photos from
the different countries in the new enlarged European union ( the pupils can
find interesting pictures in tourist office, embassies and travel agency
brochures)
and in each case, you can write to the Spring teachers from the countries
you are interested in, and ask for their help. You will find all their
addresses in the contact page:
http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/SpringSite_Contact/entry_page.cfm?id_area=515
Resources for Primary school
Simple pages to use superlative, past and passive form
------------------------
World Almanac for Kids Fun Pages ( from Kid Klicks! 3/7/03)
http://www.worldalmanacforkids.com/
a very useful source for beginner : the pages are simple, the vocabulary is
easy. Of course, sometimes it is over-simplified, but this also makes it
easy to use for beginners.
In Explore, you can for example work on the comparative and superlative in
the tables showing the largest and fastest animals:
http://www.worldalmanacforkids.com/explore/animals2.html
or the largest, smallest countries and towns:
http://www.worldalmanacforkids.com/explore/population.html
or make your students use the past, or the passive form, using this list of
inventions, with the dates and the inventors
http://www.worldalmanacforkids.com/explore/inventions2.html#3
Handicraft in English : to use imperative and positions
------------------------
Alex's Paper Airplanes (from Kid Klicks! 3/7/03)
http://www.paperairplanes.co.uk/
Learn to make and fly paper airplanes, helicopters, etc. at this site
Ideal to use : follow, fold, top left, top right, on, through....
Pupils can start with this example, and then maybe invent their own, using
the sentences they have just read.
Hanging Japanese Fish (from The Classroom Flyer 03/07/03)
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/japan/koi/
to use : cut, paste, glue, string....plus parts of a fish and colors
and at the end of the page you can access several other handicraft pages
from enchanted learning.
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/
Discover France in English
------------------------
http://www.surfnetkids.com/france.htm
You will find there pages about the Eiffel Tower, French cooking, and
tourism in france. The "just for kids" page of the French embassy in
Washington doesn't seem to be available at the moment, but I'm sure it will
soon work again:
http://www.info-france-usa.org/kids/
and see thoses pages from Oxfam in the UK
http://www.oxfam.org.uk/coolplanet/ontheline/explore/journey/france/frindex.htm
You can even access a quiz about France!
http://www.oxfam.org.uk/coolplanet/ontheline/explore/journey/france/quiz.htm
Studying pages about a topic the pupils know well is excellent to develop
their critical capacity : they can compare what they read and what they
have learnt in school or what they know. They can also discover lots of
useful vocabulary in English, and then recycle it. They can also lear
things : did you know that there are 18 "haute couture" houses in France,
and that in the Pyrénées National park there are lynx, golden eagle and
bearded vulture?
Selected Design for the World Trade Center Site ( from [LIIWEEK] March 7)
------------------------
This site presents the new World Trade Center site design,
introducing its 1776-foot spire and the "Gardens of the
World." Includes dozens of slides of architectural plans
from the firm Daniel Libeskind, as well as images of the
Individual Elements. From the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC).
http://www.lowermanhattan.info/rebuild/new_design_plans/
[ a tour of lower Manhattan. The last update to your New York lesson plan.,
with photos, drawings and plans. An of course, very interesting for all
those studying architecture!]
Census Bureau Facts for Figures: Women's History Month ( from [LIIWEEK]
March 7)
------------------------
Facts and statistics regarding women, in topics such as earnings,
education, jobs, motherhood, and more. From the U.S. Census Bureau.
http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2003/cb03ff03.html
[ a very useful list of links to all facts and figures regarding women in
the US. You can use it as a follow up for Women's Day, or just as you need
it in relation to a text you study in class. Also useful for all those who
need to work on statistics and figures ( sections économiques, gestion, etc.)
Girl Power campaign
------------------------
see this interesting site, both against drugs and alcohol use, and for the
social promotion of girls in society:
http://www.girlpower.gov/adultswhocare/campinfo/factsheet.htm
and try their quizzes:
http://www.girlpower.gov/adultswhocare/cool/quizarchive.htm
You can use as webquests since for all the answers you can access a site to
check it and learn more about the subject. See for example the women
history month quiz:
http://www.girlpower.gov/adultswhocare/cool/womencoolquiz.asp
Environment
~~~~~~~~~
the ocean's in trouble ( from The Classroom 03/07/03)
------------------------
http://projects.edtech.sandi.net/grant/oceanpollution/
http://www.occdsb.on.ca/~sel/newswave/ocean1.htm
http://www.americanoceans.org/beach/main.htm
Two tasks highlight this illuminating webquest on en-
dangered ocean environments: students must research
and comprehend the interrelationships of humans, ani-
mals, and oceans, and secondly, they must choose some
aspect of their studies and create a community aware-
ness poster. Challenge them to take their issues even
further with an informative campaign. Use the 2nd URL
above for the correct link to Ocean Pollution: How it
Kills Sea Animals, and the 3rd URL for the Healthy
Shores link.
[ an interesting process, and you find the addresses for the two broken
links. But the idea of starting from studying sites on the web and ending
in an advertisement poster is very interesting and can be applied to other
subjects, at different levels. ]
Recycle City
------------------
an interesting webquest about the three R : reduce, reuse, recycle, à
partir du site de l'EPA (Environment Protection Agency).
http://www.emsd63.n-cook.k12.il.us/Mark%20Twain/classroom%20connection/Recycle%20City/index.htm
