How to study
--------------------
East Buchanan (IA, US) Community Schools website offers this useful
"homework help guide"
http://www.east-buc.k12.ia.us/Information/Homework.htm
It offers several sites which can help students (dictionaries, etc.) , but
what I find really interesting is their pages about how to learn:
http://www.how-to-study.com/
You will find there useful cards to help students improve their learning
skills, for example:
- reading
http://www.how-to-study.com/read.htm
- the PQR3 method: Preview, Questions, Read, Recite, Review
http://www.how-to-study.com/pqr3.htm
- listening
http://www.how-to-study.com/how_to_listen_better.htm
- taking notes
http://www.how-to-study.com/tkng_notes.htm
This site can give intermediate and advanced students the opportunity to
reflect in English upon their way of learning. There are many more cards
and guides at:
http://www.iss.stthomas.edu/studyguides/index.htm
Those pages are translated in many other languages, and this might help
some students. For example, in French:
http://www.iss.stthomas.edu/studyguides/Francais/
Learning styles
--------------------
You can also choose to help your students understand that they have
different learning styles. You can first make them take those online tests
(from intermediate upwards)
http://www.metamath.com/multiple/multiple_choice_questions.cgi
http://www.berghuis.co.nz/abiator/lsi/lsiframe.html
and then study the page of advices they get, according to their own
learning style. (auditory, visual, tactile-kinesthetic)
or directly study the different learning styles:
http://www.metamath.com/lsweb/fourls.htm
[ note : there are more learning styles now, but I chose to use the most
simple grids....If you prefer, you can use this grid and questionnaire,
which are much more complex:
http://www.ncsu.edu/felder-public/ILSdir/styles.htm
and the questionnaire there gives answers much more difficult to understand...
http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/ilsweb.html
]
Lesson plan "are you a good learner?"
--------------------
Print some of the cards (reading, listening, taking notes, etc.), and give
different cards to different students (you can also make your own cards).
- Step one : students with the same cards get together to elucidate their
content, emit their own comments, suggest changes, improve them...(
students will discuss the content, and the language will be there just as a
mean to express what they mean.....that'a what real communication is all
about!)
- Step two : students with different cards get together in a group, and
build a quiz " are you a good learner?", with ten to fifteen questions, and
a score and advise sheet, with useful tips and encouraging comments for
poor scores, and congratulations and suggestions to improve even more for
the good scores. (Students will discover there the notions of positive
assessment and the idea that even the best can always improve....)
- Step three : finally, each group will test the quizzes from the other
groups and rate them.
The best quiz can then be put online on the site of the school, or given to
students from another class in the school or in another school in another
country, and they will in turn comment upon the results and the
adequacy/efficiency of the quiz.

Biography and lesson plan
-------------------------------
http://german.about.com/library/blaschwarz.htm
about.com offers a biography of Schwarzenegger, and also explains the puns
on governator and total recall. I used it in class as a basis for a debate
: do you think Schwarzenegger is eligible for governor of Cafilornia or
not? Base your answers on elements of his biography.
My students discovered the important role of the Kennedy clan in American
politics, who Simon Wiesenthal was, and the consequences of using steroïds
in sports. they also discussed whetehr the facts that he was chairman of
President George Bush's Council on Physical Fitness, and that Planet
Hollywood failed could have any importance in the public decision. Very
interesting!

Jacky Chan in CBBC
--------------------
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/cartoons/tv/jackie/
the game is not interesting, but all the characters in the serie are
presented when you move your mouse over it, and this can be useful when you
work on 'describing characters'.
