A la Une : cooking
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
American Egg Board
http://www.aeb.org/
In this site you will find info about eggs : basic facts, safety,
recipes... This site could be very useful to those studying cooking and
nutrition, but also to many other classes from second year of secondary
school upwards, because of all the pictures...
Egg handling and care
http://www.aeb.org/safety/index.html
the site includes an illustrated diagram of the inside of an egg ( biology)
and visual "egg doneness guidelines" in "Fight BAC!™ Safe Food-Handling Tips "
Egg Recipes
http://www.aeb.org/recipes/think_fast_think_eggs/new_television_ad_recipes_index.htm
Step by step poached eggs(with pictures and short texts)
http://www.aeb.org/recipes/basics/poached_eggs.htm
Step by step Omelet (with even a microwave receipe)
http://www.aeb.org/recipes/basics/french_omelet.htm
For young students, including primary school, see the "Food detectives"
Videos
- Kids a cookin' (with scripts)
http://www.kidsacookin.ksu.edu
Kids a cookin' offers you videos of TV programs about easy recipes or how
to techniques. If your connexion is slow, the film is show as a slide show,
but whatever your connexion speed, you can hear the sound and read the
script. You can also read the recipe, plus some comments, tips, and so on.
I liked "how to peel an egg", but you may prefer "how to use a can opener",
or a healthy and quick recipe. Make your choice from:
http://www.kidsacookin.ksu.edu/techniques/technique_category.asp
http://www.kidsacookin.ksu.edu/recipes/recipe_category.asp
or go through the categories from the menu on the left....
- Epicurious: The World's Greatest Recipe Collection
http://eat.epicurious.com/
This site offers you a stunning collection of recipes, and some excellent
technique videos, to learn how to cook eggs or to cut poultry (without scripts)
http://eat.epicurious.com/learn/video/index.ssf/?/learn/video/main.html
Video songs
http://www.fooddetectives.com/bactv.swf
There are some video songs, with online sound, pictures and the words
written at the bottom of the screen. The tunes are a bit old-fashioned but
it is an interesting way to introduce the vocabulary. The students may like
"yucky stuff" in "chill it" or the "cook it" tune... You can read all the
lyrics at:
http://www.fooddetectives.com/gup/lyrics.html
Games
- the "filthy fingers" game
http://www.fooddetectives.com/handwash_intro.swf
This very interesting game shows all the things a youngster does after
school, like playing with the dog or eating a sandwich, and each step is
illustrated. The students can:
-> play the game and discover that they have to wash their hands after each
activities (although it doesn't say why you should wash you hands three
times between watching TV, doing your homework, and have a drink...!!!)
-> use the illustrated situations to write their own story.
It is the best game : the "good food gone bad" is a memory game, with an
advice each time you find a matching pair; the "child who knew enough" case
is just to make stickers; and the "bacteria that keeps growing" is just a
shoot them up.
- Star chefs (from Barbara Dieu)
"I came across an interesting site for those of you who are teaching
students to work in hotels and restaurants."
http://www.starchefs.com/about_us/html/games.html
Online Quiz
After these activities, you can take the online quiz and review what you
have learnt:
Fact sheets to work from (in .pdf)
http://virtual.clemson.edu/groups/NIRC/Gen_info/nutfacts.htm
Peanut butter (with recipes)
http://virtual.clemson.edu/groups/NIRC/pdf/pntbttr.pdf
packed lunches
http://virtual.clemson.edu/groups/NIRC/pdf/lunch.pdf
Start the day with breakfast
http://virtual.clemson.edu/groups/NIRC/pdf/brekfast.pdf
( notes:
- to complement with pictures, choose "pictures" in http://www.google.com
and just type one word like: packed lunch, breakfast, bagel, muffin,
pretzel, granola bars, graham crackers, etc.
- oatmeal (from oat) and homily grits (from corn) are more difficult to
describe, maybe just saying that they are cereals to be cooked and eaten
warm could be enough.
- for a recipe of grits see
http://www.foodreference.com/html/nassaugritsr.html )
breakfast menus from a school
http://www.richmond.k12.ga.us/nutrition/Menus/breakfast_menu%20september.htm
Coloring book for the youngest
http://virtual.clemson.edu/groups/NIRC/pdf/5-a-day.pdf
a 20 pages .pdf visual guide book to download and color. You may also like
to use them as posters and put them on some kind of poster panel in your
class....
( make them discover that yams are sweet potatoes, and that grapes become
raisins, blueberries and U pick farms, etc.)
Interactive food pyramid
http://virtual.clemson.edu/groups/NIRC/Gen_info/adultmap.htm
( what food belongs to what group and how to cut back on fat and sugar)
