Created by Headbone and sponsored by the History Channel, this Internet
research adventure on the Underground Railroad is designed for classroom
use during the month of February (Black History Month). With a printable
Teacher's Guide, this is one of a series of online adventures that help
teachers integrate the Internet into classroom activities. Participating
classrooms will be eligible to win TVs, VCRs and educational video
libraries. This commercial site includes advertisements.

Critical Thinking Community: CThink (The Scout Report for Science &
Engineering February 3)

One of the major learning steps of young scientists is to think critically.
This fascinating site offers insight into the various aspects of critical
thinking. Supported by the educational nonprofit Foundation for Critical
Thinking, CThink targets two levels: the college and university, and the
primary and secondary education communities. The site is further organized
into Library, Resources, and Events sections. Within the Library section,
users may choose to browse examples of the basic elements of critical
thinking, the role of questions, the critical thinking process, or a
(modest) glossary of critical thinking terms, among others. Resources
contains guidelines and lessons on how to integrate critical thinking into
the curriculum, and Events offers information on upcoming conferences,
seminars, and academies, and gives information on CThink inservices. [LXP]

ePALS CLASSROOM EXCHANGE IS A GLOBAL K-12 COMMUNITY (USA Ed.Net Briefs,

ePALS Classroom Exchange (www.epals.com) has registered 10,000 online
classrooms, making it the Internet's largest and fastest growing community
of self-registered K-12 classrooms. Teachers in more than 90 countries,
and their 850,000 students, use ePALS to correspond and get a sense of life
and culture in other countries. An average of 50 new classrooms add their
profiles to ePALS daily. The site's database can be searched by geography,
age, grade level, language, study projects and other interests. Each
teacher submits a class profile that can be modified, updated or deleted by
the teacher at any time.

CEC Lesson Plans (The Scout Report February 5)

Founded in 1972, the Columbia Education Center (CEC) is a private
educational service organization based in Portland, Oregon that designs and
disseminates teacher training and curriculum development projects, many of
them federally funded. The CEC Lesson Plans page offers a large number of
teacher-submitted lesson plans organized by grade level in five categories:
Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Miscellaneous.
Plans are clearly written, standardized, and they cover a wide range of
topics. At the main CEC site users will find funding tips and resources as
well as an overview of current CEC projects in the Northwest US. [MD]

Last year, the average American teenage boy drank 868 cans of soda
annually, and the average girl more than 600 cans, according to a report,
"Liquid Candy," released by the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
That kind of consumption contributes to obesity, tooth decay, osteoporosis
and heart disease. Florida's Department of Education began cracking down on
carbonated beverages last year, ordering in all the state's schools a
shutdown of soda machines during school hours. Some school districts are
stopping the sale of candy in addition to shutting down the soda machines.
Shutting down soda machines causes a financial hardship on schools, which
use profits from the machines for extras like literary magazines and field
trips.

KID'S SCHOOL ABSENCES SEND PARENTS TO COURT (USA Ed.Net Briefs, February 8)

Eight parents of Canton Middle School (Baltimore) students were ordered
into court after repeatedly failing to get their children to school on
time. Four were found guilty and each could get up to 30 days in jail or a
$500 fine. They could even lose custody of their children. The cases of the
other four were postponed, but all could face similar penalties. In
Greenville, South Carolina, officials began the school year in August with
a "truancy blitz," highlighted by a trip to court for dozens of students.
The children watched as a mother was ordered to pay a $100 fine after
letting her son miss 28 days they year before. In December, a Fayette
County, Kentucky, judge ordered a woman to spend six months in jail because
her two daughters missed a combined 116 days of class over 1 1/2 school
years

annotated metasite offering online information for marine science educators
and students. With sections on Biology, Physics, Geology, Chemistry,
Climate & Atmosphere, Technology, and Use & Management, the site will not
disappoint educators. Learning resources vary from the K-12 to college
levels, although most are general in nature. The site has plenty more to
offer, as well: a Resource Pavilion (includes publications, data, etc.),
People & Places (organizations, researchers, and contact information),
Professional Development (grants, awards, and professional organizations),
Research (how to get involved or contribute information to The Bridge), and
Discussion Lists (including Ask an Oceanographer). For teachers or
