Bonne semaine!

THANKSGIVING LESSON UNIT (CLASSROOM FLYER, November10th)
-----------------------------------
This comprehensive lesson unit on Thanksgiving can be adapted for upper
elementary through to Middle School students. I'm impressed with the
author's outline of study and her bibliography. Her lessons start with
background history on separation with the Church of England, and carry
through to Life Aboard the Mayflower, the Mayflower
Compact, Settling Plymouth and the First Thanksgiving. Indian Corn
Science includes four hands-on activities/experiments, all along the Thanksgiving theme.

[ utilisable en lycée, à adapter pour collège. on peut seulement regretter
que les références soient uniquement bibliographiques et non des sites web]

The Mayflower Web Pages (Hot Five #14)

Don't miss this wealth of information about the voyage of the Mayflower and
the Pilgrim settlement of Plymouth. Find the original passenger list, the
text of Pilgrim documents, and information about daily life. You can send email questions!

MOURT'S RELATION (The Learning Company's CLASSROOM FLYER, November 10th)
-----------------------------------
These journals, written by Edward Winslow and William Bradford from
Nov./1620 to Nov./1621 give an excellent account of the Plymouth Colony in
its early stages. It was originally published in London in 1622. The full
text is available at this website.

***Teaching About Thanksgiving
-----------------------------------
(The Learning Company's CLASSROOM FLYER, November 10th)
This extensive unit on Thanksgiving is written by a Native American
teacher. It offers insight into Thanksgiving myth and misinterpretations,
and is well-documented. Try some of the Ideas for Enrichment, and use the
study and discussion questions. The Plymouth Thanksgiving Story is a good
starting point and can be used as reference or lecture material. It includes a very good bibliography, as well as recipes and the story of the corn-husk doll.
(Hot Five #14)
Read the Indian legend, The Story of the Corn Husk Doll. Learn about Indian
corn and make traditional Indian recipes. Read How to Avoid Old Stereotypes
and the Plymouth Thanksgiving Story.

Reuter's article about Britannica (ResearchBuzz #51 -- November 11, 1999)
-----------------------------------
Reuters had a story yesterday about other encyclopedia companies responding
to Britannica's new business strategy online, but what really grabbed my
eyeballs was this paragraph, apparently quoting the Britannica.com president:

``Even after the site goes live again, we will continue to add
capacity over the next several weeks until we reach a point
where we are confident that we can successfully serve everyone
who wants to use Britannica.com. As we've discovered, that's a
lot of people .... Most of the attention has probably focused
on Encyclopedia Britannica itself, but that's just the beginning
of what you'll find here. We will also offer the text of more
than 75 top-quality magazines, a directory of the best sites
on the Web, and the Books in Print data base.''

Books in PRINT? drooool... actually, if you go to the Web site now and do a
query on Britannica.com, you will get results from Britannica AND
magazines. For an example, go to:
--> http://www.britannica.com/
and do a search on ... hmm... "Richard Feynman". (Include the quotes.) The
result page you'll get will be divided into four columns. The first column
is encyclopedia entries. The second column is "best of the web" web sites.
The third column is magazine content. The fourth column is recommended
books which you can buy from Barnes & Noble. If
there's any overspill from any of the columns you can click at the bottom
of the column to get more results. Britannica has been very thoughtful
about this: sites are rated, articles are summarized, have the pub date up
front and are formatted so you
can print them or e-mail them to a friend, etc. Well done Britannica!

Britannica.com (The Scout Report -- November 12, 1999)
-----------------------------------
As is probably well-known to most readers, a few weeks ago
_Encyclopaedia Britannica_ decided to place the entire contents of
its 32-volume set online for free. The decision was widely reported
both online and in the print press, and the site promptly crashed
under the huge strain. Though a bit slow and sometimes buggy,
Britannica.com is now officially up and running, offering full access
to the encyclopedia content as well as articles from over 75
magazines. The front page of Britannica.com is partially designed as
a news portal, with recent US and world stories. From the front page,
users can also select from fifteen broad categories (e.g., Books,
Health, History, Science, Society, etc.) and access news, selected
Websites from Britannica's Internet guide, and the relevant
encyclopedia entry. Detailed encyclopedia entries and articles (as
well as related books and Websites) for specific topics are accessed
through the keyword search engine at the top of the page. Users may
find that the _Britannica_ server is still having difficulty meeting
the high demand and that several search requests or visits are
necessary. However, when the site does provide returns, it offers a
depth of reliable, if somewhat basic, information that few other
sites can match. With time, Britannica.com will no doubt smooth out
the rough edges and become a primary reference resource for general users and K-12 students.

FREE LESSON PLANS (Ed.Net Briefs 11.8.99)
-----------------------------------
The Lesson Plans Page is a collection of free lesson plans for teachers to
use in their classrooms. The site has been around for a while, but has
really started to grow recently in terms of both users and content.
The Lesson Plans Page offers numerous features and benefits a wide range of
users. Three years ago the site was started by Kyle Yamnitz, then a student
in the College of Education at the University of Missouri. It was
developed with the intent to allow educators to share resources and ideas
and to make their teaching easier. While it was started with only a few
lesson plans, it has grown to house more than 450. Last month alone, over
100 new lesson plans were added. Currently, The Lesson Plans Page offers
lesson plans in the more common subjects, which include math, science,
social studies, art, language arts, music, physical education, and
computers and the Internet. The site is easy to navigate with lesson plans
organized by subject and grade level. [Thanks to Kyle Yamnitz

In the tradition of Yahooligans (reviewed in the March 22, 1996
_Scout Report_) and other so-called "green spaces," Lycos has created
a new online safe haven for young users which is fairly
self-contained, with the exception of the advertisements. (In
response to criticisms regarding aggressive marketing to children at
similar sites, Lycos claims that the ads are clearly marked and will
not collect any personal information.) The site is composed of four
sections: the Fun and Games Zone, the Homework Zone, the New and Cool
Zone, and an area for parents and teachers. The first two sections
are fairly deep, with numerous resources and activities aimed at
various age levels. Some links in the Homework Zone lead users
outside the site, but they are first presented with a gateway page
informing them that they are leaving and offering advice on not
divulging personal information. [MD]
