Interview with Robin Yeager, sound engineer at Très Virgos Studio, who worked with Stewart at the time of Rumble Fish soundtrack recording

Cliquez pour agrandir l'imageHow did you meet Stewart ?

I met Stewart thru Richard Beggs of Francis Ford Copola's Zoetrope Studios. At that time, Richard was busy with other Copola projects, and asked if I could help out with a small film called Rumblefish. I did, of course. Francis was filming RUmblefish in Tulsa, Oklahoma and was not happy with the direction of acting. The movie was about Time. He asked his son Roman, who the best drummer in teh world was, and Roman said Stewart Copeland. At the time Stewart was finishing Synchronicity in Jamaica. He flew to Oklahoma and sat there on the film set, playing drums for help the actors understand the mood Francis was searching for.

What was his  musical direction as it was his first solo work ?

His musical direction was The Police. Although, he had just recorded "Red Rain" with Peter Gabriel. He brought a rough mx to my studio to listen to.

Did you help him , or direct him on some part of his work ?

The one time I tried to help him on his work was for the song "Don't Box Me In" that Stan Ridgeway (Wall of Voodoo) sang for the title roll. I had been working with Stewart everyday for months as the engineer. When I tried to lend some ideas for lyrics, I was immediately asked to be quiet! So, I respected his genius for making the soundtrack and playing all of the instruments (accept a few). It was my recording studio, I had worked with many well known acts, and I always respected their creative process, and kept my own creative process to the console, microphones and tape in front of me.

Is there any demos he didn't use for the soundtrack and did you record them ?

Yes, I have much material from Rumblefish that were my own monitor mixes. They sound incredible and I would like to share them. But I would never do so, without the consent of Stewart, or more to the point, Derek Powers.

Did he speak to you on the future of The Police at that time ?

Stewart did not speak to me about the future of The Police. But, and I think this is common knowledge, He and Sting did not respect each other. There were some phone calls to Stewart by Sting during our work together. Out of courtesy to Stewart, I would excuse myself and my staff from the Control Room when this happened. I can say that it usually took several hours for Stewart to focus again on his work.

Any memorable anecdotes and souvenirs ?

I have many memorable anecdotes, and several souvenirs.  I would also refer you to my own website www.tresvirgosstudio.com and read the section of my memoirs titled Rumblefish. Also, look carefully at the photos to see some interesting things.

What are working at at the moment ?

I retired from the business of music in 1990, in order to raise my children (then 12,10 and 8 yrs old). I  needed to radically change my lifestyle in order to do this. I am currently a Manufacturers Representative in Oregon, Washington and Idaho for several companies in the Vitamin and Supplement industry. I continue to produce music (again, please see my website for the recent photos with Jimmiejames at Fantasy Studio) and am enjoying some really refreshing music here in the Northwest. Music that is personal, simple and has wonderful lyrics. It is actually played by real musicians and not COMPUTERS!!!!

You can find the Très Virgos site page  (where you can find a long story about Rumble Fish recording)  at

A big thank you to Robin Yeager for his simplicity and kindness.

Some news from D'Drum and Stewart's concerto

Hi Michel,

Thank you for your message, and sorry for the delay in responding. Yes, it is true that Stewart Copeland is composing  a concerto for D'Drum and the Dallas Symphony. It will be approximately 40 minutes in length and is comprised of 4 movements at this time. He is still composing and we are collaborating with him. It involves Gamelan instruments from Bali and Java, in addition to many different World Music percussion instruments. That is all we can say at the moment, but we will be happy to do a more extensive interview at the proper time. Also, watch for a new website which will be online soon and be more informative. You may continue to contact us at this email address for more info or to order CD's.

Thank You,
D'Drum

Stewart Copeland is back to the grind. This time he's writing a concerto for a gamelan and orchestra, a task which even Copeland admits to making him sound rather "pompous," and "even worse than Sting".

Strange things happen

When Stewart Copeland gets dressed, he has an identity crisis. Should he put on “leather pants, hostile shirts and pointy shoes”? Or wear something more appropriate to the “tax-paying, property-owning, investment-holding lotus eater” his success has allowed him to become? This dilemma is at the heart of Copeland's vastly entertaining memoir-in-stories-that-could-be-told-over-a-meal, STRANGE THINGS HAPPEN.

The world knows Copeland as the drummer for The Police, one of the most successful bands in rock history. But they may not know as much about his childhood in the Middle East as the son of an agent for the CIA. Or his film-making adventures with the Pygmies in the deepest Congo. Or his passion for polo (”Brideshead Revisited on horses”). STRANGE THINGS HAPPEN moves from Copeland's remarkable childhood through the formation of The Police and their rise to stardom, to the aristocratic life that followed, and finally behind the scenes of The Police's extraordinarily successful reunion tour. It's a book of amazing anecdotes, all completely true, that take us backstage of a life fully lived. (And yes, there are chapters about Sting, too.)
