| | Harry Clay | In 1972 young Stewart played with Harry Clay. Harry Clay aka pooldude has been a music fan, player & songwriter across 5 decades. Coming from a professional musical family, pdude was classically trained starting in 1st grade. He's a multi instrumentalist with background in piano, Hammond B3, clarinet, sax, baritone horn, voice, acoustic & electric guitars, bass guitar, & synthesizers, as well as modern digital recording. During the '70s & '80s, pdude worked, jammed or recorded with dozens of talented musicians, including Stewart Copeland (Police), Mick Mars (Motley Crue), CC DeVille (Poison) & Bruce Gary (Knack).
M : You said you played with Stewart around 71/72 , could you tell me where and when ?
Harry : I knew Stewart when I lived in Ocean Beach (San Diego) CA in 1971-72.
Stewart was a student @ US International University @ Point Loma, & lived in the dorms. I believe he then transferred up to UC Berkeley
His best friend was guitarist Corky Tanassy, with whom Stewart still visits periodically today.
I hooked up with Corky & tried to launch a new band, rehearsing @ my soundproofed apartment house in Pont Loma. Stewart came with Corky as a "package deal".
The band didn't get off the ground because Stewart was committed to earning his college degree, which precluded him from going out on the road. Within a couple more months I managed to get Whitehorse going, & we all moved in different directions.
Here is the link to my Blog "The Drumming Policeman" where I speak in more detail:

I haven't spoken with Stewart in about 20 years. We had a nice visit then, when I sold him a bunch of gear for his home recording studio in LA, & met his wife...but that was the last time we spoke.
M : Any chance you'd recorded the rehearsals at that time with Stewart playing drums.
Harry : There are no recordings from that "garage band".
We were all pretty poor, except Stewart, whose parents paid for his dorm & eating expenses & equipment...
...& they hadn't yet introduced cassette recorders, only expensive reel to reels. We learned songs by playing albums on the stereo in my little studio.
We played 1 casual day-time gig @ the University, but I am unaware of any photos existing.
I will say that Stewart was pretty phenomonal as a hard hitting, but very accurate drummer, even @ that early age. |
