Even with the completion of the Ev. N A-114 Neural Complement, and the destruction of the 21st angel, the horror of Unit 06's final, violent moments still remains a fresh memory in the hearts and minds of the inhabitants of Tokyo 3 . . . more specifically, in the heart of one Aoi Tamashii . . .so much so, that the girl is given to make a choice that, in the weeks to come, will radically alter the course of her destiny, as well as that of the other children . . .

Indeed, Aoi's decision marks a serious turning point not only for her,
but for what remains of Project E, as well . . .

Meanwhile, as Rei Ayanami struggles to further understand the strange connection she shares with the child Tenkei, Asuka Langley Soryu finds herself facing yet another emotional impasse . . . her continued difficulty as the pilot of Evangelion Unit 02 will come to a head in episode 51', as NERV dispatches the Evas to combat a new threat to their rebuilt metropolis from the most unexpected of places . . .

As the latest threat to the sanctity of Tokyo 3 is felled beneath a final tremendous blast from Eva-02, another battle for survival is already well underway.  This one, however, lies in a place a world distant from the havoc of the derelect city streets . . . It is here, locked away, imprisoned within the entry plug of the remains of Evangelion Unit 00, that Rei Ayanami lies immersed in darkness . . . It is here that she will come one step closer to learning of the true nature behind the being known simply as "Tenkei," as the plug walls around her seem to close in . . .

. . . and a single breath of air becomes as precious and priceless as life itself . . .

In the next episode, In light of the most recent and past hardships, failures, and betrayals, Asuka Soryu must confront one of the most difficult decisions of her life . . . indeed, it seems that not even Shinji Ikari can prevent her from leaving NERV, Eva, and Tokyo-3.

As a familiar, gloomy weather front once again settles over the skies above Tokyo 3, the inhabitants of the city seek shelter from the impending rainstorm that is promised to come.  Far below the fimament, however, another sense of forboding has made its way into the confines of NERV, as the designated 7th child - Aoi Tamashii - begins her pilot testing.

But strange happenings, it seems, are common to this girl, as the results of her first tests become the object of question for Major Misato Katsuragi, as well as for the new head of E-project. . .and measures must be taken, to the dismay of both parties, to ensure that NERV will not once again be put at risk of yet another angel infiltration. . .

Meanwhile, despite having made the decision to stay in Tokyo 3, Asuka Soryu quickly finds that her situation has not truly improved. Unable to even stomach Misato, let alone show up for testing, the girl soon finds herself solitary and reclusive - watching others from afar.  Indeed, even her friendship with Hikari will suffer, as news of a new qualified child only intensifies the question of her actual worth as an Eva pilot. . . which, in her mind, can be equated with her worth as a human being . . .

There is a fine line between what is percieved, and what is not.

the difference between an act that is evil, and an act that is merciful

the division between obsession and dedication.

the void between joy and pain . . .

or so, it would seem.

The eyes are often referred to as "The window of the soul."  Through these, one can interperate such abstract concepts as intention, truth, even love.  But there are those who do not have this privelage.  Ones whose "windows" have had a shroud of permanent darkness inoxerably pulled over them, cutting them off from percieving, and being percieved.  The eyes are lifeless voids, pale orbs resembling clouded glass that do not reflect that which is within, and that which is without.

Then, there are those who can see without the need of their eyes.

And it is here, perhaps, where the clearest sight begins . . .

Fear does not merely run skin deep,

Hatred knows boundries beyond life and death,

and pain is not always fleeting. . .

Stark truths known well by the children of the new millenium;  the bane of past experiences which have left knarled scars on the collective consciousness of the young.  Hectic planning, preparation, and execution take precedent, as word of a possible invasion becomes  known to those who covertly provide NERV council.  Personal issues are forced aside, as matters of survival demand the full attention of the command and crew of the organization's ranks.  For Asuka Soryu, however, such mettle does not come easily: neither in the real world, nor in that of childhood memories . . .

Indeed, as the zero hour approaches, new truths will become apparrent to the second child.
Among them, perhaps, the darkest truth of all . . .

At the the very edges of the sun's reach,
 there exists an enigma.

The familiarity of the known world where, consumed by shadow,

an altercation of light and darkness and of sound and silence struggles eternal.

A quiet prison

and two orphans of the night . . .

In the wake of MARI's descent upon Tokyo 3,  shadows still haunt the children of NERV.  For the boy Tenkei, these shades make ordeals of sleepless nights, and the face which, in turn, haunts his dreams; for Asuka, they manifast as the spectre of doubt, one that exists even in the aftermath of her seeming triumph over the angel of death;  for Shinji, the adumbration of the walls which have begun to close in upon him, and the for the young girl whom he reaches out to;  and, for Rei, it is the very shadows themselves which seem to cry out . . .Unbespoken by those who oversee their welfare, unacknowledged by the pilots themselves;

they, the children of Eva, the children of these shadows.

A quiet voice stirs through the darkness,

its questions offered to the heavens as divine supplication.

A young girl, bound by two wills, must render a cause no longer her own. . .

The face which has haunted the child Tenkei's sleep now has a voice, as NERV is rocked by a calamity from deep within.  Against the advice of his confidant, Gendo Ikari has sought the final reconstruction of Evangelion Unit 04, driven by the role it must play to his cause.  It is only when Tokyo 3 once again becomes the embattled city, that the consequences of this act will be revealed to the smoke filled skies;  and it is here, upon the advent of a new angel, that the greatest nightmare of the child which resides within the creature once known as MARI shall at last be realized . . .
