Hi,
Here's just a little page to share with you the progress of my next guitar building project, the hornet (the other ones can be seen here).
design : between April 2017 and April 2021
Work started in April 2021
Guitar finished: November 2021
The project:
Ma previous one,
I did it "fully", meaning the neck too. I'm very happy with it and it's become my main guitar. But I thought I would not make another one before long, because it's too time consuming.
Recently, it began to be itching, and I wanted a home-made P90-equipped guitar (love P90's). So...
Starting point:
- I'm not gonna make the neck myself. It's too time-consuming
- For the body, I got the wood from a friend. His father assembled (surfaced and glued) planks of what I think is walnut wood
- A single P90 at the bridge
- An inverted headstock to make the low strings longer (thus with higher tension)
- I will try to avoid using any power tool
- I'm also challenging myself by not making any blueprint
OK, some pictures...
The neck (had to do some fret levelling):
The body
Shaping the body
The neck pocket :
The body slab is pretty thick, and I want a body that's slightly bigger than my previous guitar. Thus, the body's heavy.
So I decided I was going to arch both the top and bottom to make it lighter:

The headstock
That's when I made a classic mistake among amateur luthiers: rashness
I had done all the good calculations and all the proper marking. Then, I thought I didn't like the shape of the head. So I drew handfree a new shape. Then immediately plotted the holes marks for the tuner:
And I immediately went on with drilling...
And right after being done with the last hole, it struck me. There wasn't enough room for the tuners...

Well... Gotta fix it... Fill the holes...
Next, I needed to prepare a veneer:
And then... Thinking, re-marking, re-thinking, re-re-thinking, praying, and ok-let's-do-thising:
