Japanese Linguistics - European Chapter, edited by Yoshihiko IKEGAMI, Viktoria ESCHBACH-SZABO and André WLODARCZYK, Kurosio Shuppan, Tokyo 2007, pp. 310.

DESCRIPTION

This volume contains papers read (with a few exceptions) during the 9th Conference of the European Association for Japanese Studies which took place from 23 to 26 August 2000 in Lahti (Finland). Opening the EAJS conferences to the modern style of organisation using the system of call for papers, it became clear that Europe was no more only an “old continent” as a significant number of people took the time and trouble to attend the meeting.
The papers are divided into three sections: (1) Cognitive Approaches, (2) Interpersonal Relations, Social Aspects and Politeness, (3) Phonology, Syntax, Semantics and In-between. In each section, the papers are arranged in alphabetic order according to the authors. We are very pleased to be able to publish papers of distinguished scholars from Japan, among them the Professors Yoshihiko IKEGAMI, Seiichi MAKINO, Jiri V. NEUSTUPNÝ and Zendo UWANO.
Our thanks are due to the Japan Foundation. Special thanks go to Professor Yoshihiko Ikegami for his advice on editorial matters. Our thanks also go to Dr Martina Ebi who helped us in the preparation of this volume. We hope that this book will, like the conference, help to forge additional links between the members of the growing network of specialists of Japanese Linguistics from Europe and other countries in the world.
As for the transcription of the Japanese data and reference books the Hepburn-system was used unless the phonological approach of an author’s research was committed to other conventions.
