A la une cette semaine, les derniers développements des "reality
TV": certains choquants, qui ont beaucoup d'audience, d'autres plus
intéressants, mais dont on parle moins (1900 house). Choquant aussi "In the
News" , l'anonymat accordé aux assassins du petit James.
Mais ce qui est choquant est aussi déclencheur de parole! Vous
pourrez étudier cette info avec vos élèves en liaison avec deux sites sur
de jeunes prisonniers américains, et le site "Death penalty Information
Center". Dans 'Teaching Practice' vous trouverez deux revues et deux sites
pour enrichir vos pratiques. Le 24 est le nouvel an chinois, le nouveau
président des USA sera bientôt investit: découvrez des sites sur ces sujets
et d'autres. Et, à la fin de ce numéro, un dossier Jazz, qui
commence par
un plan de séquence sur la musique particulièrement bien conçu.

Reality Television (lu par Jean-Marc Dumont sur e-teach )

It's about scandal, deceit and controversy. The latest
reality based television series on the Fox network,
'Temptation Island', shows scantily clad singles trying to
tempt couples to stray from their mates. In the end, there
is no million dollar cash prize, just a loser with a broken
heart or a winner with a committed relationship that refuses
to be tempted. The result may end in pain and hurt feelings
for some, but the contestants say it will test the
boundaries of their relationships. After last year's hit CBS
series, Survivor, there have been more attempts to lure in
large audiences to watch reality based television shows.
Critics say these shows, ranging from the "Jerry Springer
Show" and "Who Wants to Marry a Mulit-Millionaire" to "When
Animals Attack" and "the Mole," are the degeneration of
entertainment television. Those who don't see the harm in
these programs have called it a "modern morality play."
Is there any harm in television shows that exploit pain?

we all just lighten up? Is it voyeurism or entertainment?

Where does "Reality TV" end? Is there any limit to what
can be considered "Reality TV?" How are shows like "The
Real World" and "Survivor" any different from, say the
nightly news, or documentary shows on The Discovery
Channel? They all represent documented accounts of real
life events. True, the "Reality TV" shows follow topics
that have been carefully planned by producers, but they
are edited to create a narrative and tell an effective
story out of "real" events just as the nightly news
presents "real world" events in narrative format or
a documentary creates a beginning-middle-and-end
structure for some "real" topic. If "Reality TV" is a
paradox, then isn't "reality media" one too?

This collaborative effort between National Public Radio (NPR) and
Picture Projects offers an intimate portrait of the US criminal
justice system, involving inmates, legal and law enforcement
professionals, victims, and families. The first site is the homepage
for a new series from the producer of the acclaimed _Teenage Diaries_
radio series. The _Prison Diaries_ series is based on audio journals
kept by five inmates, four correctional officers, and a judge. The
series has just begun to air, so at present audio files are available
for only two programs. Background information, some images, and QTVR
panoramas are available for two unaired episodes. Users will find
more detailed information and numerous additional resources at the
online documentary, 360degrees. The site features the same two
stories currently available at the NPR site, but also offers a number
of photos, additional audio commentary, transcripts, and background
information. Other resources include a timeline, quizzes, a forum,
classroom ideas, a reading list, a glossary, links to radio projects,
and information about organizations working on criminal justice
issues. Please note that many features of the site are under
construction, but it promises to become one of the most thoughtful
and valuable examinations of these topics available online. [MD]
