NEW SERIES ON EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE (ASCD MARCH 2)
------------------------------------
In an exclusive article by Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., he reflects on the
advances made since his book, "Emotional Intelligence," was published in
1995. The article can be accessed directly at
http://glef.org/fiveyears.html. In addition, you will find video interviews
with Dr. Goleman, Dr. Elias, and other experts and practitioners at
http://glef.org/eigallery.html .
Seeing social and emotional learning in practice is key to understanding its
value in American education. A number of schools with social and emotional
learning curricula are profiled in articles and on video, including the
program at Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven, CT. (
http://glef.org/socialdevelopment.html   )
For those seeking a summary of research on effectiveness and workplace
benefits of social and emotional learning in schools, go to
http://glef.org/eiresearch.html . Finally, the Emotional Intelligence Action
page provides strategies and resources for developing schoolwide support for
social and emotional learning http://glef.org/eiaction.html .

- Useful videos of after-school programs that offer examples and interviews with experts.
- Helpful advice from leaders in the field.
- You may be able to receive professional development credit.
- Voice opinions and get feedback on our Discussion Boards.
- And much, much more!
Workshop Description:
"After-School Programs-From Vision to Reality" is the latest of eleven
workshops in the CONCEPT TO CLASSROOM series. The workshops are designed for
K-12 pre-service and in-service educators at all levels of Internet
proficiency. Each workshop also has online tools available to help
participants acquire professional development credit.
In this workshop, we look at the benefits that a quality after-school program
can provide to students, their families, and their
community. Participants will examine the aspects involved in creating
effective after-school programs; and they will be directed through a
step-by-step guide designed to help them to create programs that address the
physical, emotional, academic, and social needs of children.
In addition, participants will see examples of successful programs and
activities, discover paths to find funding, and have the opportunity to
explore an interactive tool that helps them determine the strengths and weaknesses of
their individual programs. They will view video clips of students and teachers
in action, as well as professionals in the field who offer their opinions and
advice. They will have access to a resource list that offers a wealth of
information about places to reach out for help in setting up or maintaining an
after-school program.
[ même si cela ne nous concerne pas directement, je pense que vous pourrez,
comme toujours, trouver des ressources et des pistes intéressantes dans cet
excellent programme.]

Mr. President: Profiles of our Nation's Leaders (The Scout Report -- March 2)
------------------------------------
http://educate.si.edu/president/
Did you know that Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory for
less than three cents an acre or that William Henry Harrison "was one
of the first U.S. politicians to use false advertizing," campaigning
as a simple man who lived in a log cabin while he had been to medical
school and grown up on a Virginia plantation? Mr. President, a new
Website from the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies,
is studded with these sorts of facts. The site uses a gallery format
to give brief introductions to each of the former US presidents. Five
galleries are arranged chronologically, each containing thumbnails of
famous portraits of eight or nine presidents. Clicking on a thumbnail
brings up a page with an expanded version of the portrait, a brief
quote from and blurb on the president, and a "fast facts" card citing
brief stats. While not an in-depth site, Mr. President is carefully
composed, and everyone should find something of interest when
browsing here. [TK]

College Prep Quiz (BLUE> Blue Web'n Update: February 23, 2001)
------------------------------------
http://collegeprepquiz.com
If students are in the lab wondering what to do after they have finished
their assignments, have them give this a try. You start with a randomly
generated question in English vocabulary, then go on to World Languages,
Global Studies, Life Sciences, U.S. History, Earth Sciences, then
Mathematics. If you miss a question, you need to go back to an English
vocabulary question.
