A very busy week ahead for those going back to school this week or
the next one : April 22th is Earth Day 2002, and April 22th-28th is Turn
Off TV week! In this newsletter, you'll find tips and addresses to
celebrate those events, some addresses to study and produce poetry (a nice
alternative to tv watching!). Here also, "in the news" a list of online
tributes to Queen Mother, in "internet tools" a new search engine to try
and in "freebies" a free cd to order from Polaroid. And don't forget, in
"Teaching Practice", to read and watch a report about an interesting
crosscurricular project in maths and physics called "Bungee Barbie".

Have a nice week!

On this site, you'll find all the reasons to encourage children to reduce
their TV watching time. You can give them facts and figures and initiate a
debate, talk about violence on television, the impact of ads and so on...
See their fact sheets:
http://www.tvturnoff.org/factsheets.htm
and especially:
http://www.tvturnoff.org/images/facts&figs/factsheets/Facts%20and%20Figures.pdf
and encourage them to turn to poetry instead : April is poetry month!

TV Turn Off Week resources
---------------------------------
from Ontario
http://www.lin.ca/lincfm/vsitecrit.cfm?vsitecode=TV
you'll find there some more fact sheets, suggestions of replacement

Bungee Barbie ( CNNs Educational Resources - April 15)
---------------------------------
http://www.cnn.com/video/fyi/2002/03/07/fyi.bungee.barbie.cnn.html
see this report about a concrete cross curricular project, involving math
and physics, and you could also imagine including mechanics in it. But
whatever the project, the conclusion of the student is excellent : we
learnt that we need to work as a team to succeed, and that physics can be fun!
Ceci pourrait être une réponse à tous ceux qui s'interrogent en ce moment
sur l'intérêt des IDD, TPE et autres PPCP....

Earth Day
~~~~~~~~
Earth Day @ Planetpals (EduHound Weekly for April 11 )
---------------------------------
http://www.planetpals.com/earthday.html
PlanetPals provides lots of Earth Day arts and crafts activities and
links to projects that students can participate in as they prepare for and
celebrate Earth Day. The site includes recycling and energy-saving tips and
tricks. An environmental calendar lists other Earth related holidays and
celebrations.
Don't miss the Earth Day recycling kits -- on recycling, pesticides, and
saving energy -- ready to print out and use with your kids!
navigate from:
http://www.planetpals.com/earthdayideas.html
[ many interesting pages :
for beginners, or to make students talk, use the posters:
http://www.planetpals.com/EDrecyclethings/recycle_lesson.html
http://www.planetpals.com/images/houseclean_sm.gif
http://www.planetpals.com/pprecycle.html (3 posters to print and cut out)
http://www.planetpals.com/americarecycles.html#Recycle%20Wall%20Chart (a
wall chart)
http://www.planetpals.com/ppstickers/template.htm (stickers to print or
send as postcards. Great ideas to encourage students to draw their own!)
http://www.planetpals.com/iagames/ecogame/litterbug.htm (interactive
recycling or disposing advices)
http://www.planetpals.com/worldlywise.html easy lists of advices, to
print and work as texts, or use as udeas for a debate.
http://www.planetpals.com/planetpals_flash/ppintro1.html the background
music is a bit too moisy, but there is an interesting text with each of the
small characters, explaining pollution and the problems it causes. ]
Earth Day Groceries Project (Big Chalk's WOW)
---------------------------------
Looking for a new way to help kids learn about the
eco-friendly themes of Earth Day? Since 1994,
thousands of students from around the world have
participated in the Earth Day Groceries Project.
The project is simple and free of charge: parents
and teachers "borrow" paper grocery bags from
local supermarkets, which students decorate with
messages about recycling, pollution, wildlife
conservation and more. The bags are returned to
the grocery store, and on Earth Day (April 22),
customers receive their groceries in the
decorated bags. Connect to the project's Web
site to obtain a project starter kit, free
print materials and educational activities.
http://www.earthdaybags.org/
[ for all levels, including kindergarten and primary school. The idea is to
have children decorate by hand paper carrier bags which will be given away
in shops on Earth Day. Whatever action you chose to do, I think it is nice
to do something on Earth Day! ]
Earth Day 2002 on Infonews
---------------------------------
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/infonews/themes/earthday.htm
A page of sites for your lessons and for the pupils to use in autonomy. The
Global Warming Games (interactive pictures) and the hazardous Wastes test
game are especially interesting for secondary school pupils (à partir de la
4ème).
~~~~~
Poetry
~~~~~
Listening Booth (The Classroom Flyer Friday Edition 04/12/02)
---------------------------------
http://www.poets.org/booth/booth.cfm
Listen to renowned poets recite their own poetry at
this audio download site; browse by author or poem
title. (Uses RealPlayer.)
[ you can listen to the poems told as you read them, a good way to make
poetry real to the pupils.]
Poetry Activities (The Classroom Flyer Friday Edition 04/12/02)
---------------------------------
http://www.tengrrl.com/tens/035.shtml
Celebrate National Poetry Month with these creative
activities. Ten poetic exercises explore unique
themes for upper elementary through high school.
[ a fantastic page, packed with excellent ideas of activities. you feel
like trying them all! I especially love the idea of the poetry kit.
Usually, kids are asked to produce a poem : here they are asked to build
themselves a kit that others will use to make poems. A deeper thought
awakening task...!]
Forms of poetry for Children (The Classroom Flyer Friday Edition 04/12/02)
---------------------------------
http://falcon.jmu.edu/~ramseyil/poeform.htm
Along with couplets, cinquains, haikus, limericks,
concrete verse, etc., you will also find guidelines
and online resources to illustrate and exemplify the
various forms of poetry.
[ another mine of resources. i especially enjoyed the beautifully
illustrated nursery rhymes and the old "Alice in wonderland" illustrated
book on :
http://www.megabrands.com/alice/indexx.html ]
Poetry for Upper Elementary Students (The Classroom Flyer Friday
Edition 04/12/02)
---------------------------------
http://falcon.jmu.edu/~ramseyil/poemiddle.htm
This site provides a whole list of appropriate poems
for upper elementary students (it includes the poems
themselves). Try a poetry recital day, where you can
have contests for best recital, best interpretation,
longest memorization, funniest portrayal, etc.
[ you could use those poems at any level, and encourage the students to
write their own in the same style.]
Sign up to receive a FREE Visual Learning PEP CD,
complete with lesson plans and class activities
from Polaroid. The Polaroid Education Program
(PEP) Visual Learning Center was established to
help teachers reach their students more
effectively. By using the camera in a series
of guided exercises, a student's observation of
the world intensifies and curiosity and
sensitivities are awakened. Get our latest
visual learning exercises online, then send
for your free CD today!
[ for once, they don't seem to refuse oversea applicants!
And you can find interesting activities on their website too, appropriate
for all pupils, from primary school onwards.
I especially enjoyed this activity where the pupils must write a poem about
himself, using freely associations like "If I were a tree, i would be an
oak because it is the strongest tree in the world", and when the poem is
written, the students must illustrate it with a photo (or a drawing). This
would also be an excellent activity for Mother's day or Father's day...
In addition to the usual relevant Web pages results of a
search engine, Teoma presents two other unique kinds of
results: Refine, a list of "suggestions to narrow your search,"
and Resources, which are "link collections from experts and
terms of relevancy ranking, but a lot smaller in size of
database. Owned by Ask Jeeves.
