A la Une this week, World No tobacco Day. I know, it was on May 31st, last
Friday, but last Friday, the only thing everyone thought about in France
was the World Cup! So here are some pages to make your students reflect
upon tobacco and its effects, and some suggestions of use, according to
your local equipment. Then, some "end of the year" activities, some
resources for primary and secondary school, including poems that could be
used by both, and some pages about French exams : découvrez le Brevet en
Anglais!

World No-Tobacco Day

the World no-tobacco Day was May 31st. Just like Earth Day, it was on a day
when a more important even took place : the World cup.....
have any of your students hear of it?
Well, even though, it isn't too late to become aware of how bad tobacco is
for everyone.

there is a very interesting but difficult activity on Self Access
(available only this week...).

here are some tips on how to use this page:

- if you don't have a computer room or internet access in a room:
you can make transparents from the real ads from magazines on :

these activities are suited to any level, including beginners.

- if you have a computer with an internet access in your class :
with advanced learners, you can explore together the site :

or "play" with the tobacco meter, and comment on the changes :

- if you have a computer room or can send the students to work autonomously :
I took my year 9 (2ndes) to the computer room and had them scan these
sites, looking for all the different ways our life is affected by tobacco.
They discovered interesting facts :
- that even a smoker's dog can die of second hand smoking lung cancer !
(cruelty to animals ;)
- that smoking ages your skin cells (efficient on young girls who pretend
it helps them stay slim...)
- the strategies cigarette brands have adopted to keep on advertising (in
car races, for example)
If you want them to take notes and keep track of what the read, you have to
give them an assignment :
- make a poster to persuade people to stop smoking (for a low set or beginners)
- write a short play ( 10 min) using what you have found on the web. If you
have no better idea, you can write the dialogue of a parent wanting his/her
child to stop smoking, or the contrary, a child trying to make his/her
parent to stop smoking. But if you have a good idea, go ahead ! Any
dialogue related to the subject is accepted, and the more original, the better!
then the students will act their play in groups, each group will elect the
best play, and then both play will be improved and acted again in front of
the whole class, and the best group will have a reward. You can also video
the play and put it on the school website.... Pour les lycéens, c'est une
agréable façon de finir l'année....

end of year activities

the end of the year is coming near, an many of you are looking for end of
the year activities. Here are some ideas :

Write a letter to next year students (from yves Gouast on e-teach)
------------------------
Ask your students to write a letter summarising the work done this year in
your class, and giving advices and tips regarding what they can expect to
live next year with you. This will also provide you with precious
informations about what your students think of the activities you have
organised during the year.

Drama
---------
Ask your students to write and act a short play, featuring a lesson in your
class. This will show you how they saw you as a teacher, and what they
think of the atmosphere in your classes. Be careful though : their remarks
might be rather straightforward, and you may not like it.....;)

What lives in the water?

on this page you'll find links to various lessons, activities and
ready-to-use documents. I liked the Pond Mini-books, with the names of the
animals and the noise they make. You can then transfert it to oral,
including it into a song like Old Mac Donald had a pound, and in this pound
there were some ducks....Or do it the other way round : start from a visit
to a pound in French, then teach them the song just by ear, and finally
give them the mini-book to color and read. This way, they will start
reading with the correct pronounciation.

note : the drawing are rather childish, but the text is too difficult for
beginners. It'll be fine for intermediates, or save it till the beginning
of next year : it could be a good opportunity to introduce your classroom
etiquette, or make the students write their own.... (à partir de la 4ème).
You could also suggest the students to associate comments to the verbs,
describing the mood of the people who behave that way....
[ this could also be a good end of the year activity, as many of the other
'english-to-go' lessons you have been saving for months....!]

World Cup and Child Labour

Last week, the World cup was 'à la Une' in infonews n°157. This week, you
can find on the Académie de Versailles website, a remarquably comprehensive
work from Christiane Caillot about "Fifa World Cup And Child Labour",
mainly centered on the second part and the UNICEF website, featuring a
remarquable cartoon about Child Labour and Football which was presented in
Infonews some times ago. the page includes : objectives, resources (paper,
video and websites) and several suggestions to use them in class (it's in
French, but non French speakers can use the links) :

Oui, le Brevet en anglais, ça existe! Sur le site d'anglais de l'Académie
de Versailles, rubrique COLLEGE, vous trouverez une page "Diplôme National
du Brevet,
Epreuve d'anglais destinée aux candidats libres" avec quelques sujets à
télécharger :

Ces sujets peuvent aussi servir aux collègues qui désirent évaluer leur
classe de troisième en fin d'année. Car l'an prochain, il y aura une
évaluation nationale en fin de troisième, qui remplacera celle de début de
seconde, qui vient d'être supprimée....
