Since most of the lycées have now finished their lessons, this
Infonews suggests addresses targeting lower secondary school and primary
school students. "A la Une" this week, a new boys' band interviewed in Time
For Kids (complete with videos, bios, lyrics, and explanation of the
references in the text...) . This may be an interesting way to finish the
school year : with a group not yet known in France!
Then, everything you may need about Father's Day : songs, activities,
history, cards, games and quizzes....
In "resources", you'll find a ready-to-use lesson about the oldest man in
the world, a guide to bikes and against racism, an article about beanies
wearing in school and the risks of too clean a home; story making and
alphabet songs for primary school, and the lastest infos from the Ministry
( lu au B.O.).
This will be the last Infonews for this school year. I wish you
all very nice holidays, and a well deserved rest after those last days of
school, exams, and corrections....
I'll see many of you this summer at Cyber-langues, and I'll send
Infonews n°160 just before we go back to school, beginning of September.

Until then, I wish you all the best!

Discover a new boys' band, rap style, but not as bad as they look. Talking
about them could be a good idea for this end of year period. It is the type
of music the pupils like, and they are approved by parents! They are very
young (15 and 16) but they are clean, and even promote homeschooling, a
good opportunity to introduce the pupils to this type of teaching which is
more and more widespread in the US. I discovered them through this article
in "Time for Kids", very simple and easy, you can even use it in primary
school.....

Getting the 411 on B2K
----------------------
http://www.timeforkids.com/TFK/explore/story/0,6079,236526,00.html
[ simple questions, easy and funny answers, and informations about this
group which differ radically from the usual interviews of groups which
stress their rough background. ]

Website of the group
----------------------
http://www.b2klovesyou.com/
there you can hear some of the songs, and read their bios. (more difficult
than the article, but informative. Plutôt pour troisièmes ou lycée)

Previews of the songs
----------------------
http://www.artistdirect.com/store/artist/album/0,,1645905,00.html

B2K interviews and videos on MTV.com
----------------------
http://www.mtv.com/bands/az/b2k/audvid.jhtml
[ since I couldn't find mention of it on MTV France, I suppose the group
hasn't come to our part of the world too.....how exciting for your pupils
to know about a group before anyone talks about it in France!!!!]

references mentioned in the "Time for Kids" article
----------------------
- 411 is the phone number to get "White and Yellow Pages information" . In
everyday language, they tend to use 411 as a synonym of 'informations about'.
- "chitlins" are some kind of tripes, are part of what's in an andouille
saussage. You can read all about it on this page, and discover that
"Chitlin sausages are also a delicacy in France"......!!!!
http://www.greatworldchefs.com/chitlins.html
as for the other type of food mentioned, you know them all : octopus,
calamari...and caviar....

Father's Day
~~~~~~~~~~
Coolest, bravest, funniest Dad Contest (
http://blackdog.net/holiday/dad/index.html )
----------------------
"A girl's World" offers you to enter this year's contest, and to get ideas,
you can go through the text of the 2001 winners.
http://www.agirlsworld.com/amy/pajama/fathersday/dad-contest.html
on the site, you will also find a history of Father's day, and links to
pages of certificates, ideas for original gifts, and cards.
My Dad on "my hero.com"
----------------------
http://myhero.com/hero.asp?hero=myDad
you will find there short and easy to read stories from children who
explain why their Dad is their hero. Those texts can be very useful if you
decide to enter the above contest....
Father's Day jokes
----------------------
http://www.activityvillage.co.uk/jokes_for_fathers_day.htm
nice, simple jokes, suitable for lower secondary school.
Father's Day on "Holiday on the Net"
----------------------
"Holiday on the Net" is the best website for informations about the special
days all over the world. For example, I find their "Thanksgiving" page
really excellent.
Here is what they offer about Father's Day : you will find there easy and
more complex texts, ideas of activities ideal for primary school and lower
high school, peoms and "tributes" to Dads to read or post....
http://www.holidays.net/father/
Father's Day songs
----------------------
http://www.dltk-kids.com/t/dad/songs3.htm
this song is an adaptation from "my bonnie is over the ocean...", so there
is no sound, but you have the words and the keys if you play the guitar. A
good idea ffrom kindergarten onwards....
Caroline and Dad Do the Alphabet Rap
----------------------
http://www.amtexpo.com/babbooks/alphabet/index.html
a book to read : the story of an alphabet game between a father and a
daughter...Read it first with your pupils, and then play it in class....
Father's Day craft
----------------------
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/stpatrick/handprintrainbow/
Enchanted Forest has some crafts that could be used for Father's Day. This
idea of handdprints, whatever the presentation, works always very well with
parents. And you can do it even in kindergarten!
http://www.sesameworkshop.org/parents/activity/results/1,4121,,00.html?hdesc_ids=4461
dancing hearts and pop up cards to make, from Sesame Steet...
Father's Day Awards
----------------------
http://blackdog4kids.com/holiday/dad/award/
This page works like all card pages. There you'll find an interactive page
to make special awards for fathers. The children chose their background,
the title, and can write three lines to explain why he is the best father
in the world...then they send the card, or they can print it.
For primary school mainly : children must be able to read and write simple
things in English.
Father's Day online games
----------------------
http://blackdog4kids.com/holiday/dad/index.html
on this page you'll find puzzles, crosswords, a quiz...a few stupid games
you can forget...
Father's day outdoor games
----------------------
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Troy/9087/father/fgames.html
games you can adapt to your class....
the oldest man (from Instant lessons)
----------------------
http://www.english-to-go.com/
this week's lesson is about the oldest man in the world, and includes a
reference to our national Jeanne Calment. It is a lesson for elementary
level, you can use it with very good pupils of primary school in their last
year, or in the first years of secondary school ( je le verrais plutôt en
5ème).
[ registration is required but it is worth it. And remember the lesson is
available only this week....!]
"A fun guide to bikes" (from Education World )
----------------------
http://library.thinkquest.org/J002670/
a guide for American under-tens, that could be used with the teacher in
primary school, or by the pupils themselves in secondary school. the
sentences and the vocabulary are simple, and the subject usually works well
with pupils, especially boys.
We're too clean!!! ( from TheSchoolDaily )
----------------------
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?storyID=2044982&thesection=news&thesubsection=general
for upper secondary school.
An interesting article from in this newsletter from New Zealand, dealing
with the fact that many current diseases could be caused by the fact that
we lived in too clean homes as a child....
To be discussed in class....!
SCHOOLS ENDORSE BEANIES FOR STUDENTS ( from TheSchoolDaily )
----------------------
http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,1223801a1800,FF.html
an interesting article about a headwear I didn't know was popular among
pupils in New Zealand (it is a cap without a rim). Read how the school
officials integrated it in the uniform instead of forbidding it....and thus
ended the fad! A strategy to be discussed with your students....
And to know more about beanies, here is a historical view :
Mister Rogers' Neighborhood
----------------------
http://www.pbs.org/rogers/index.htm
A program for kids on PBS television offers various activities for young
children. You can access to songs, and coloring pages, to color online or
off line. What I like most are the stories : the serie : how ...are made?
where you can see the video, or stills and written explanations, and then
you have to put the pictures in the right order and tell the story.
http://pbskids.org/rogers/R_house/picpic.htm
or you can put images in the order you like, and invent your own story
http://pbskids.org/rogers/make_believe/
Alphabet learning ( http://www.bigchalk.com )
----------------------
http://www.pacificnet.net/~cmoore/alphabet/index.htm
American people are great fans of alphabet learnoing and spelling contests.
Here is a way of learning the alphabet and a few more expressions, like '
Cat starts with a C' .
For young beginners.
Sing the Alphabet Song ( http://www.bigchalk.com )
----------------------
http://www.totcity.com/totplaces/Activities/school005/school005.html
Another great site for youngsters, here you'll
find a Flash animation paired with a soundtrack
supplied by a preschooler. As kids press the
letters of the alphabet on a keyboard, the site
displays the letter and the child sings it out
loud using the familiar "Alphabet Song." "Now I
know my ABCs, next time won't you sing with me?"
[ complete with flash animation, the letters as they are said, and the full
song! idal for young beginners, even for non-readers.]
Les évaluations : les outils nationaux 2002-2003
----------------------
http://www.education.gouv.fr/botexte/bo020409/MENK0201038N.htm
Un article essentiel à lire absolument. Dans cet article du B.O. n°19 : les
évaluations diagnostiques, les évaluation bilans, la banque d'outils (on en
a déjà parlé dans Infonews) et même les bilans au niveau international
(mais ça ne concerne pas les langues). Vous y trouverez la suppression de
l'évaluation de début de seconde, remplacée par une évaluation bilan en fin
de troisième; et l'évaluation de fin de primaire.
attestation EUROPRO
----------------------
Dans ce cadre, les collègues de LP et BTS seront intéressé par cette
expérimentation de l'attestation EUROPRO délivrée à des étudiants ayant
effectué leur stage professionnel dans un pays anglophone. Elle ne concerne
encore que peu d'établissements, mais sa généralisation pourra permettre de
valoriser les élèves qui acceptent des stages à l'étranger.
