"In the News" this week, the vote in Ireland and some information
about the integration of the new countries in the European Union. Then some
sites to find funny pictures, comics, and editorial cartoons for your
classes. For the youngest, some sites for Halloween, with activities,
recipes, masks, pumpkin carving, poems and songs... Three resources for
secondary school: one about Justice in the US, one about Music and some
useful links for career exploration and to reflect about future jobs. For
beginners, a site featuring US and UK currencies, and another one with
interactive games around the planets: both sites can be used in autonomy by
young children. Then two sites about teaching practice in the US, and at
the end, don't forget to go to the "Instant Lessons" site to register for
the world's largest lesson. Like last year, you and your students can take
part in this attempt to break the world record of the greatest number of
students learning the same lesson in the same day, or even at the same
hour. Last year, my students were very proud to take part in a world record!
Have a nice week!

Halloween Fun (from Sarah Rapnouil)
----------------------
http://www.efl4u.com
there are 3 free fun activities based on Halloween:
Halloween is a great time for parties, visiting haunted houses and listening
to (and/or watching) scary ghost stories. This worksheet offers students the
chance to create their own really scary ghost stories. Pairs of students
create a ghost story using this worksheet to help them organize their
thoughts. It also assists them with how to proceed from simple sentences to
easy paragraphs. Students will be able to improve their storytelling skills
with descriptive adverbs and adjectives.
Also a Halloween maze and word circle for younger pupils.

No ordinary Pumpkin (from The Classroom Flyer Friday Edition 10/18/02)
----------------------
http://www.riverdeep.net/current/2001/10/102201t_pumpkins.jhtml
Charlie Brown would surely appreciate the wonders of
these GIANT pumpkin patches--but how can you move a
1000 pound pumpkin to enter it into a great pumpkin
fair in the first place? Measure off the world's lar-
gest pumpkins in this October installment for River-
deep, where pumpkins are a very serious business.
Student activities include estimating weights and
circumferences of your own class pumpkins, and link-
ing to some pretty spectacular designs for carving
jack-o'-lanterns. You may even wish to sponsor your
own school-wide jack-o'-lantern design contest, choos-
ing various categories such as spookiest, silliest,
most creative, etc.
[ a great site about pumpkins, and links to pumpkin carving and the pumpkin
patch to know everything about the subject. For intermediate and advanced
students.]

Halloween-themed creative writing (from The Classroom Flyer Friday Edition

books (use pumpkin cutouts for the covers and paper).
They will be given the first sentence to help fire up
their imaginations, and try to keep to the task of in-
cluding all story elements, with a focus on the main character.
[ an idea for an activity for secondary school students with an
intermediate level. An occasion to produce a bboklet displaying the
students' writings. They will be so proud of it!

let your students decorate their masks with glitter,
paint, beads, feathers, etc.

Teaching Practice
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Learning to Discipline ( from PEN Weekly NewsBlast for October 18)
----------------------
No one is born knowing how to control 125 adolescents for five hours a
day and teach the curriculum at the same time. Learning to discipline takes
years. Mostly, it's trial and error. Nothing works all the time, and
what works well in one class has no effect on another. At the start of her
teaching career, Margaret Metzger confesses, she ricocheted between
being a drill sergeant and Mary Poppins. In this Phi Delta KAPPAN online
article, she shares with new teachers the lessons she's learned along
the way about managing and disciplining young adolescents.
Take part in Instant Lesson Record
----------------------
On 12 November 2002 we are hosting the World's
Largest Lesson! It is our attempt to get as many teachers from around
the globe teaching the same English-To-Go Instant Lesson(tm) within a 24-
hour period.
There are two record attempts. We are trying to break last year's
World's Largest Lesson record and we are also trying to set a new
Guinness World Record for the Largest Simultaneous Lesson! By
registering your intent to participate you automatically become part of
our attempt to break the English-To-Go record; however you must be able
to teach the lesson at a specific time in your country to be eligible
for the Guinness Record.
It is FREE to participate, so tell your fellow teachers, friends and
students! We want to make this year's event bigger and better than the
last! There are great prizes to be won, too.
We invite you to participate in the event. Click below for more
information and to register.
http://www.english-to-go.com/largest/
[ You can take part in two records : the largest taught lesson in the same
day, and at the same time. This year's lesson is like last year's about
landmines. Here is what they say about the lesson
"This year's World's Largest Lesson builds on last year's in continuing to
educate people about landmines. The widespread use of these antipersonnel
landmines has continued, making it even more difficult to eliminate a
weapon that kills or maims thousands of people every year. The lesson is
able to be done by students from Pre-Intermediate to Advanced levels and
has reading, speaking and writing activities. (The lesson covers landmines,
things that endanger people's lives, understanding the main idea,
information gap fill, true or false, multiple choice, and 'still' used as
an adverb.)"
Last Year, although the subject landmine was not very exciting in itself,
the text contained references to Charities and John Lennon, which allowed
us to have intersting discussions from the text. I'll let you know what can
be done with the new text as soon as it will be published.
So don't hesitate to register!]
