Halloween, and various resources including the famous Abbot and Costello
skit "Who's on first?", a game about careers, a webquest about American
Indians, a site about the Roman Empire and another about mobile phones.
Then three lessons to help your students use word processing and computers,
a site about acting as a teaching practice, and three useful tools to find
on the internet, including our colleague Jacques Omnès' free recording
software....and finally a list of grammar books you might ask your students
to use in upper secondary school.

Enjoy your holidays and happy halloween to you all!

Tandem Conference on Canal Eifel
-------------------------
I think most of you know everything about Tandem and have taken part in one
or the other of the workshops I organised here and there. You may have also
taken part in the virtual conferences on Tappedin, hosted By Phil Benz.
This conference on the web is about the same, but there is more oral, and
less chat. From a technical point of view, it might be interesting to take
part. For the content : it is in French, aimed at e-learning project
managers, and will show then how tandem can be used to learn efficiently
any foreign language they like, the way they like, when they like, and with
a real native.
Since the presentation and the interactivity (the questions) will be oral,
you must have a fast internet connection : cable, ADSL or ISDN (Numéris).
To register for the Tandem conference on Tuesday November 29th from 12:30
till 13:30:

even with beginners.

News from Google
-------------------------
http://news.google.com/
this is the address for the last and hottest news....
For example, today I found those addresses about the lead actor in the last
Harry Potter film:

Racism and stereotypes (from About.com)
-------------------------
http://racerelations.about.com/library/weekly/bl911anniversary.htm
an interesting page written for the anniversary of the 11th of september.
These links are an excellent complement to the film "Bowling for Columbine"
or just a work around the flash intro, the trailers and extracts and the
interviews on the film website or all the elements on Mickael Moore's website.

PBS Global connection about the Middle East
-------------------------
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/globalconnections/mideast/educators/index.html
an excellent page of links to videos and lessons about racism, stereotypes,
role of women, the veil, religious fanaticism and so on.
And don't miss this lesson about "reading political cartoons":
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/globalconnections/mideast/educators/types/lesson3.html

C-Span and Worldnet videos (from J.M.Dumont)
-------------------------
Jean Marc Dumont has just found the American TV channel Worldnet on the
Hotbird satellite 13 degree West. Just point your dish towards it and tape
the programs!
For Worldnet programs, go to:
http://www.ibb.gov/worldnet/
This channel gives teachers the right to use its programs in class, and it
also retransmits CSPAN programs:
http://www.c-span.org/classroom/index.asp
On this website, you can also receive for free a poster of American
presidents. Fill in the form, and although it requires a reference to an
American State, it seems to take the request in consideration...Worth
trying....
On CSPAN, you can also see many interesting videos, especially about the
war to Irak and the coming American elections. This is only for advanced
pupils since there is no script, and the videos are only in streaming.
on the page "international", you can see the questions to the prime
minister in the British House of Commons:

Halloween

An online tour, guided by "Claudius", is also available.
[ an site for all those who are interested by Roman history (many of our

un parcours de découverte en collège.]

Who's on first? (from The Classroom Flyer Wednesday Edition 10/23)
-------------------------
http://fisher.osu.edu/~tomassini_1/whotext.html
Introduce your students to the hilarity of Abbott and
Costello with their famous "Who's On First?" skit--the
complete dialogue is here. Your class can pair up to
take different approaches to performing this skit, in
several emotional styles (try rap, Valley Girl, a la
Shakespeare, etc.)--have fun with this one.
[ you can use it as a whole, or just parts of it, according to the level of
the students. And if you had never heard it, it is the moment to disover
it. It is a cultural "must know"!

Internet tools

MagnetoJO : Make your students talk ! (from J.Omnès on Cyber-langues)
-------------------------
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/jacques.omnes
Jacques Omnès who wrote several useful programs like Reconst (a program
for the reconstruction of a text that the students hear or read or both)
allows you to download for free from his website MagnetoJO, an easy to use
tool which can work with any program (such as exercises made with
HotPotatoes or Reconst) and which allows the students to record their own
voice, listen to it and compare it to a model.
The program is simple, quick to download, and free!

Free cds
-------------
http://www.free-cdsoftware.com/?asi=1854&msi=8080
some interesting titles there. Of course, they are not really free, since
you must pay the postage, but the prices are still interesting....

Hot Potatoes 5.5 released
-------------------------
with support for www.hotpotatoes.net
Hot Potatoes version 5.5 for Windows has been released. You can download it
from:
http://web.uvic.ca/hrd/hotpot/
This is the last major version 5 release, and includes a number of
important innovations and developments, including these:
· hotpotatoes.net is our new web hosting service developed in collaboration
with Creative Technology. Version 6 exercises can now be uploaded
automatically to hotpotatoes.net from within Hot Potatoes. Your students'
scores and other information can now be saved and viewed online within the
hotpotatoes.net hosting environment. For more details on this service, go
to http://www.hotpotatoes.net
· The Masher program can upload other types of file (word-processor
documents, static Web pages, graphics etc.) to hotpotatoes.net, even
without a Masher registration key.
· Dublin Core/RDF metadata can now be added to the data files and V6 output
files. This allows you to add descriptive information about your exercises
to your data files and exercise pages, in a standard and widely-used format.
· The V6 output format has been extensively rewritten to make it 100% XHTML
1.1-compliant.
· JBC scoring has been updated, so that questions attempted but left
incomplete (i.e. where the correct answer was never chosen) are included in
the score. This gives a percentage that more accurately reflects what has
been done at each point in the quiz.
· Insertion of HTML tags has been enabled in JCross clues and JCloze clues.
There are many other small bugs and fixes. Version 5.5 is a free upgrade
for anyone entitled to use version 5.x under the free-use terms or who has
a version 5 commercial licence, and we recommend that all Hot Potatoes
users working on Windows download the new version as soon as possible.
The next major release of Hot Potatoes for the Mac (or any computer running
a Java Virtual Machine) will be Java Hot Potatoes 6, coming out in mid
2003. It will include the features listed below and all the same
functionality as Windows Hot Potatoes 6. We are not adding these features
to Mac Hot Potatoes 5.x so we can concentrate on releasing version 6 as
soon as possible.
[ HotPot, or Hot Potatoes, is a very well known, and widely used free
program which allows teachers to create various exercises with any type of
support, including sound tracks and videos, and then either put them
online, or on an intranet, or on individual machines for students to use.
If you don't know it yet, these holidays are the right moment to try it out! ]
