I found this site by chance as I was looking for review of "bend it like
Beckham". This is a site for English teens (and older), and I found the
vocabulary worth a look : so many words and references which didn't make
sense for me..... But it is the way teens talk, and I feel just as
uncomfortable when I listen to a radio for teenagers in France....
and if you go deeper inside the site, you find interesting texts about
teen's problems (drinking, becoming a model, teen pregnancy, etc.)

Boggle's World is a resource site for language arts and ESL teachers. The site
contains free worksheets, crosswords, word searches, and flashcards to
download print and photocopy. There are also lesson plans and articles with a
mix of theory and practice. The materials are created by teachers and have all

for teachers and students of European and American history. The resources
combine maps and animation to create short video presentations on such
subjects as the growth of the United States and the First World War. Though

presentations, including a ten minute presentation on the westward expansion
of the United States, the early history of the American Revolution, the
European alliances before the First World War, and the beginnings of the
Mexican American War. The site provides a timeline of American history that
can be referred to during the American expansion video. Students and

Feeding America: The Historic American Cookbook Project (from The Scout

The Michigan State University Library, in partnership with the MSU Museum,
have created a fascinating look into American epicurean history with their
online trove of influential 19th and early 20th century American cookbooks.
Currently, the archive includes page images from 33 cookbooks, and when the
project is completed in September 2003, the site will include page images
and full-text transcriptions for 75 cookbooks. Visitors to the site will
find an excellent introduction to the cookbooks in an introductory essay
written by Jan Longone, a curator of American culinary history at the
University of Michigan. The cookbooks on the site are divided into topical
areas, such as regional, ethnic, and general cookery. Equally helpful is the
ability to search the entire cookbook collection by author's name, title,
and the complete text. The site concludes with a glossary that explains
different terms used in these historic cookbooks, such as pippin and codlin

Lessons tailored to the learner, not the teacher (from PEN Weekly NewsBlast
for December 13)

Federal law requires schools to create individualized education plans
(IEPs) for special-education students, but says nothing about everyone
else. Schools in Maryland, Vermont and Virginia, among other states, have
adopted these personalized plans for regular-education students. The idea
has gained so much momentum that Washington state schools Superintendent
Terry Bergeson recently suggested creating "accelerated learning plans"
statewide for seventh-graders who don't pass the Washington Assessment of
Student Learning. The learning plans, which basically involve getting
parents, teacher and student to draw up a list of goals and ways to reach
them, have yielded numerous benefits. Parents say they feel like they're
"part of the solution." Administrators say the plans are effective
communication tools, building bridges between school and home. The plans
are notorious for devouring special-education teachers' time. For most
teachers, the problem is not the concept of an "individualized education."
It's that managing a batch of education plans can seem like a second job.
"It's more work for the teachers," said Principal Benjamin Wright. "But
that's too bad. In the long run it's best for the kids."
