A la Une today, a contest from the BBC, for which our students
have to write an essay about what 2020 will be like. The best productions
will be published in a book that will be released this summer. And even if
you don't want to take part in the contest, you can find interested
resources in the associated pages and discussion forum.
Then some new ideas of activities around Europe, to do on Spring Day
or to prepare your students for something happening this day ( a meeting, a
debate, a videoconference with pupils from another country, etc...); two
resources for primary school, one visual and one auditory; an activity
around the last Harry Potter film, from one of our colleagues; three
resources for secondary school; two links for teaching practice : Paris new
English website, and an article about motivation; and in internet tools,
discover how to get the last Mac OS X for free!

Have a nice week!

Write the "Book of the Future" with BBC
-----------------------------
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/onthefuture/
BBC launches this facinating interactive way to reflect about our life
in 2020. You access info on the theme for this week (pop culture at the
moment, and advertising), and a discussion forum ( on the right, with a
subject line on war...) where you can read what the other think or suggest,
and discuss with them.
I love the article "rubber ducks"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/onthefuture/a923537
and this, of course, can go along with studies of "1984" and "brave new world":

1984
---------
- Teacher Cyberguide on 1984 :
http://www.sdcoe.k12.ca.us/score/1984/1984tg.html
with activities for advanced students.
- Georges Orwell 1984 :
http://www.warroad.k12.mn.us/moredocs/stdnt_work/rhohener/1984.1.htm
with lots of links, a description and analysis of the characters and a very
useful summary of the novel.
- Mr. Geib's webpage for George Orwell's terrifying brilliant novel of
dystopia, "1984."
http://www.foothilltech.org/rgeib/english/orwell/
a very interesting site, very visual, with a link to a newspeak dictionary,
a guide on how to be a good dictator, and a link to big brother reality tv
shows, plus lots of references and food for thought.

Brave New World
-------------------------
- Teacher Cyber-guide on Brave New World :
http://www.sdcoe.k12.ca.us/score/bnw/bnwtg.html
with interesting activities around the techniques of brainwashing
(hypnopedia) , advertising and of course cloning.
- Mr. Geib's webpage for Aldous Huxley's prophetic vision of the future,
"Brave New World."
http://www.foothilltech.org/rgeib/english/bnw/
with infos on background and context, a diagram, and an essay with two
pictures to start a discussion :
http://www.foothilltech.org/rgeib/english/bnw/essay/

Europe
~~~~~~
Make your voice heard! (from Suzanne Pratcher)
-----------------------------
Here is part of the results of the Spring Teachers meeting in Paris.
Suzanne offer you this interactive site on which your pupils can enter
their texts about their dreams, ideas or suggestions about the future of
Europe. And you will find lots of other ideas of activities on this page:
http://www.univie.ac.at/Romanistik/Sprachwst/site/spratscher/vbs_myEurope_spring_activities.htm
to register for Spring Day, go to:
http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/SpringSite_Register/entry_page.cfm?id_area=514
on her site, you can also see the reports of our Spring Teachers meeting
(with photos of us all ;)
Mind maps (from Nuria de Salvador)
-----------------------------
on the site of this Spring teacher from Spain, you can find activities she
did with her pupils in English, to help them understand Europe better and
discuss its future:
http://www.xtec.es/%7Ensalvado/spring/
on this page, you find a menu on the left. Scroll down to 'mind maps' and
click on it : the picture of what the pupils did is difficult to read, but
you still get an idea of what the pupils can produce, and you have a link
at the bottom of the page to find out more about what mind maps are. Then
go to 'instructions' and you find worksheets and useful links to set the
work going. Then, in 'corrected mind map' you find a nice example of what
you can obtain.
A very interesting exercise, to work in the same way as webquest, but with
a different way to present the results.
Quizzes (from Suzanne Pratcher)
-----------------------------
Suzanne has also put online a list of very interesting quizzes about the
countries in the project:
http://www.univie.ac.at/Romanistik/Sprachwst/site/spratscher/vbs_myEurope_spring_quizzes.htm
interactive map (from resources on Spring Day)
-----------------------------
a precious resource if your pupils don't know where all the countries of
enlarged europe are:
http://www.lizardpoint.com/fun/geoquiz/euroquiz.html
this map can be used from primary school onward. It is a bit too easy for
upper secondary school, but it can be a useful start point for researches.
You can find this resource and many more in the resource page of the Spring
Day website:
http://www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/SpringSite_Resources/entry_page.cfm?id_area=572
Special report from the Guardian (from Jean-Philippe Raud-Dugal)
-----------------------------
http://www.guardian.co.uk/euro/
this excellent page offers a complete outlook on the euro, and links to
articles, polls and interactive quizzes.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/eu/0,7368,396838,00.html
and this is the special report about ' European integration' . You will
also find there lots of documents to work on Europe and study the point of
view of England and several other countries.....
Picture Dictionary (from barbara Dieu on e-teach)
-----------------------------
http://www.pdictionary.com/
This simple, attractive and easy to use picture dictionary online will help
primary school pupils to find and learn the vocabulary they need.
Songs for teaching (from about elementary schoolteachers)
-----------------------------
http://songsforteaching.homestead.com/index.html
this site offers suggestions how to use songs to teach different subjects.
the subjects are listed, and then you access a list of song, with sound
clips and links to the book it refers to (to buy at Amazon.com) , as for
"for teaching initial sounds and alliterations" :
http://www.songsforteaching.com/InitialSounds.html
lots of very useful ideas!!!!!!!
Alain Krizic has done this page for his pupils...and for yours, and it
works!!!!
From this page, the students can watch the trailer with "Dobbie the Elf"
and do three exercises, then read chapter eight and do some more exercises,
and then they can go onto the WWW activity, a kind of webquest with a very
efficient page of links to work from.
Why do students lack motivation? ( PEN Weekly NewsBlast for January 24)
-----------------------------
We know that children, almost from birth, are driven by curiosity; they're
like sponges, soaking up everything they see and hear. Learning is as
natural to them as breathing, and they delight in every accomplishment. As
author James Raffini puts it, "Rarely does one hear parents complain that
their preschooler is 'unmotivated.'" Research suggests that kids'
motivation to learn is significantly influenced by their home environment
and by the attitudes of their parents toward learning and questioning.
Children who arrive at school with a learning deficit often struggle and
fail in classrooms and may withdraw as an act of self- preservation. But
many youngsters from reasonably affluent homes and with educated,
encouraging parents often lack motivation, as well. This suggests that
something about the school experience may contribute to the problem. In
this article, Ron Wolk interviews his 7-year-old grandson to find out why
school is perceived by so many children as getting "in the way of life."
