This week, for French teachers, the new pre-curricullum
for la classe de première, and for everyone, some new ideas for Spring Day
which is drawing near ( : it is still time to think about it, register and
organise something! Among the new ideas, you will find simple things to do
with beginners, that you can easily do in primary school, lower secondary
school, or with a very low set of students.
Then some other resources for primary school, which can also be adapted to
other groups of beginners or lower intermediate, some resources for
secondary school, including the new buildings to replace the WTC in NY and
two sites to promote equality for women, then two webquests about
environment, and in teaching practice, you will learn through several sites
and examples, how to use primary sources ( original texts, photos, ads,
maps ) to teach history and social sciences....and you can also adapt it to
language teaching of course! and to end this letter, a special bonus from
our colleague Olivier Colas : a free cdrom in English about Newquay (UK),
and a way to get a free encyclopedia Britannica...if you pay for the

also try the quizzes : most of them are in English, and all the easy ones
about the countries and their capitals can be excellent for young children
to locate the different countries in enlarged Europe and learn the names of
the capitals.
In general, I would advise primary school teachers to look for resources
based on discovering the countries (geography, cities, food...) and their
languages (how to say hello...), rather than focusing on the European Union
itself, which is a very difficult subject to tackle, even with older
students, and for which there are no easy resources.

I hope these few hints will help you organise something for Spring Day. You
can also, on the school level, organise other activities like:
- a European meal ( made of typical food like cole slow , goulash and
crèpes.... I'm not sure it will really taste good together, but it is just
an idea...;)
- a European costumes contest (made out of paper, drawn from pictures found
in encyclopedia or on the net
- a logo for Europe contest
- a motto for Europe contest (or what is Europe for you...)
- a song for Europe (there is the official anthem, but young people may
invent something younger...)
- an exhibition of : newspapers, postcards, drawings, collages, photos from
the different countries in the new enlarged European union ( the pupils can
find interesting pictures in tourist office, embassies and travel agency
brochures)
and in each case, you can write to the Spring teachers from the countries
you are interested in, and ask for their help. You will find all their

Studying pages about a topic the pupils know well is excellent to develop
their critical capacity : they can compare what they read and what they
have learnt in school or what they know. They can also discover lots of
useful vocabulary in English, and then recycle it. They can also lear
things : did you know that there are 18 "haute couture" houses in France,
and that in the Pyrénées National park there are lynx, golden eagle and
bearded vulture?

Two tasks highlight this illuminating webquest on en-
dangered ocean environments: students must research
and comprehend the interrelationships of humans, ani-

links. But the idea of starting from studying sites on the web and ending
in an advertisement poster is very interesting and can be applied to other
