Article: "Ghoti" = "Fish"(lu par jean sahaï dans Progress! Newsletter No. 9 EnglishCLUB.net http://www.englishclub.net )
--------------------------
Some languages are "phonetic". That means that you can
look at a word and know how to say it. English is *not*
phonetic. You cannot always look at an English word and
know how to say it. You cannot always hear an English
word and know how to spell it.

George Bernard Shaw (GBS) was a famous Irish writer. He
wanted to reform English spelling so that it was more
logical. He gave the following example -

What does this word say: "ghoti"?

His answer was "fish".

How can "ghoti" and "fish" sound the same? GBS explained it like this:

the gh = f as in rouGH
the o = i as in wOmen
the ti = sh as in naTIon

Of course, this was a joke. But it showed the
inconsistency of English spelling.

It is very important to understand that English spelling
and English pronunciation are not always the same.

SAME SPELLING - DIFFERENT SOUND
Do not place too much importance on the spelling of a
word. The more important thing in understanding English
is the sound.

Here are five words that end in "ough". In each word,
the "ough" has a different pronunciation:

bough rhymes with cow
cough rhymes with off
rough rhymes with puff
though rhymes with Jo
through rhymes with too

Many words have exactly the same spelling but are
pronounced differently when the meaning is different.
These words are called "homographs". Here are some examples:

bow (noun: front of ship) rhymes with "cow"
bow (noun: fancy knot) rhymes with "go"
lead (verb: to guide) rhymes with "feed"
lead (noun: metal) rhymes with "fed"
wind (noun: airflow) rhymes with "pinned"
wind (verb: to turn) rhymes with "find"

DIFFERENT SPELLING - SAME SOUND
Many words have different spellings but are pronounced
exactly the same. These words are called "homophones".
Here are some examples:

sea, see
for, four
hear, here
one, won
knight, night
him, hymn
to, too, two

What can we learn from all this? We can learn that the
sound of a word is more important than the spelling.
Of course, it is good to spell correctly. But to help
you understand spoken English and many rules of English,
you should think first about the SOUND of the words. Do
not worry too much at first about the spelling.

For example, the rule about pronouncing the past simple
"-ed" ending of regular verbs. You have probably learned
that when a verb ends in "d" or "t", we add "-ed" and pronounce it /Id/ as an extra syllable.
/Id/ wanT wantED

So why do we have:
/Id/
divide divided ???
"Divide" does not end in "d". It ends in "e". But it does
end in a /d/ SOUND. With this rule, it is the SOUND at
the end of a word that matters, not the LETTER. You must
think about the spoken word, not the written word.

This is only one example of the importance of sounds in
English. There are many more examples!

Halloween
~~~~~~~~
Three Sites for Ghouls and Goblins (The Scout Report October 22)
--------------------------
The scariest night of the year is almost upon us, and these three
sites will help users get into the proper "spirit." The first,
Halloween Online, is simply put a massive Halloween resource, with
decorating and costume tips; a guide to carving and displaying your
pumpkins; a selection of featured articles and interviews; Halloween
recipes; downloadable graphics ("Scream Savers") and music files;
e-cards; online games; and a large collection of links, among other
offerings. The second site covers one subject, and it covers it well:
Jack-O-Lanterns. At the site, users can learn the history of
Jack-O-Lanterns, pick up carving techniques, download free printable
patterns, read a FAQ, and browse a gallery. While not strictly a
Halloween site, Horrorfind.com will help any users out for a spooky
fix. This searchable metasite indexes a variety of horror-related
sites, grouping them by topic, such as Ghosts, Werewolves, Halloween,
Vampires, etc. Each link is briefly annotated, and users are invited
to rank them. Also included at the site are What's New and Top Rated
lists and electronic horror greeting cards to send to your fiends.
The Moonlit Road (Education Site Reviews 10/15/99)
--------------------------
CONTENT: How many of us remember sitting around a campfire or on a dark
front porch telling ghost stories and looking over our shoulders into the
night? The Moonlit Road is a Web site you can use to bring classic spooky
tales from America's South into your classroom.
REVIEW: Storytelling is a fine art that has been passed down through the
generations. The Moonlit Road is an excellent place to expose your class to
this great American tradition. The site features a new set of stories each
month and offers them in text, audio, and Mp3 versions. A fun activity
could include giving students the text versions of the stories to tell (or
read) to the class, next listen to the professionals tell them in rich
southern accents, then compare the two renditions. Be sure to pull the
curtains and darken the classroom! The Mp3 files make it easy to download
and save the stories ahead of time. If you want to haunt your classroom for
Halloween, then definitely take a walk down The Moonlit Road! Your students will love it!
You Can Handle Them All (Education Site Reviews 10/15/99)
--------------------------
CONTENT: You Can Handle Them All is a great resource that provides a model
for working with more than 100 different problematic behaviors. The site
has special sections for parents and teachers.
REVIEW: Parents and teachers know about kids who misbehave. It is a fine
art learning how to deal with these behaviors in positive ways. Often,
adults react to the misbehavior, when what they really need to do is
respond to the child at a deeper level to correct the cause of the behavior
in the first place. You Can Handle Them All is an outstanding place for
parents and educators to come to gain insight into what can motivate kids
to act out. At present, the site describes 117 different behaviors, looks
at the effects of the behaviors on others, and offers advice about good and
bad ways to go about changing the behavior. Be sure to check out the
Behavior Management Overview & Foundations section for a well-written
explanation of the educational philosophy behind this helpful discipline model.
Politics.com (The Scout Report October 22)
--------------------------
The political season is, of course, already fast upon us, and
interested users will do well to add this new site to their list of
online political news sources. A rare example of a political site
created as a business venture, Politics.com is designed to serve as a
central source for news and analysis of the US 2000 presidential
race. A clean and easily navigated site, Politics.com is composed of
four major sections. The first contains smartly-packaged, if concise,
profiles of the leading candidates, including recent ratings,
fundraising vs. opponents, issue positions on several selected
topics, a very brief biographical sketch, last election results, and
voting record. A collection of campaign videos in RealPlayer format
is also available from the Candidates section. The Money section
contains a campaign finance primer, dollars raised by month, soft
dollar leader board, and search engines that allow users to search
for contributors in geographic areas or by name. The Polls section
features recent polling results on individual candidates and other
related issues, and the Directory is a collection of annotated
political links organized by topic. Additional resources at the site
include breaking news, recent opinion pieces, and a free email daily briefing. [MD]
***Nutrition Explorations (The Scout Report October 22)
--------------------------
This new site is compliments of the National Dairy Council and
provides resources to help educators teach children about nutritious
foods and a healthy diet. The site is made up of four principle
sections. The first, Teacher Central, contains monthly updated ideas
and activities for teaching nutrition, as well as annotated links and
suggested books. The second section, the School Cafe, is designed for
school foodservice professionals and includes promotion ideas,
nutrition facts, and links to related resources. The third portion of
the site, The Family Table, offers advice, activities, and tips for
parents who want to help their children develop healthy eating
habits. The final part of the site is aimed at kids themselves and
offers games, quizzes, recipes, and more sites to explore. While a
bit thin on content and probably dairy-centric, the site as a whole
does offer some useful tools for educators and parents who want to
instill healthy eating habits in children. [MD]
Creative Quotations (Education Site Reviews 10/15/99)
--------------------------
CONTENT: Inspiration comes in many forms, including from the voices of the
past. Creative Quotations is the home of a rich and searchable list of more
than 16,000 quotes dating back to the words of Aristotle and beyond.
It is like the seed put in the soil -- the more one sows, the
greater the harvest.] -- Orison Swett Marden. And so it is with teaching
too, isn't it? The Creative Quotations site is an archive of seeds waiting
to be sown in your classroom. Use the quotes as story starters, put them up
on the wall to inspire you students, or let students search the database to
find that perfect addition to an essay or a report. Users can search the
site or browse lists of quotes by monthly theme or by information about the
author (for example, profession, date of birth, etc). Ask older students to
click on quizzes as an introduction to the site and to give them an idea of
what's available. The quotes are chosen for the site based on the
creativity of the author. The Creative Process section explores the
creative thinking process and is worth reading. Bookmark this useful site
The Est. of Hans Jensen v. The White Star Line (Education Site Reviews 10/15/99)
--------------------------
CONTENT: The Est. of Hans Jensen v. The White Star Line allows students to
reenact the civil trial brought by Carla Christine Jensen against the White
Star Line, the company that owned the Titanic. The suit alleges the
wrongful death of Ms. Jensen's fiancé, Hans Jensen, as a result of
negligence on the part of the crew of the renowned luxury liner when it
sank after striking an iceberg on its maiden voyage.
REVIEW: The Est. of Hans Jensen v. The White Star Line provides an
excellent opportunity to explore the American legal system through an
intriguing case that is sure to pique your students' interest. The site,
provided by the Anderson Kill & Olick law firm, is well written and
engaging. Students can explore the many facets of this controversial trial,
including short biographies of witnesses, testimony, a description of
negligence law in 1912, and evidence entered. After reviewing the Web site,
students can reenact the trial and then make their own decision of guilt or
