Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids
--------------------------------
(COOL> Cool Web Sightings - Issue #52)
In a past issue, we provide a link to the Justice Department's Kid Site.
Now their is a site that provides a fun and educational introduction to
how the U.S. Government works, and the guide is none other than Benjamin
Franklin. This site is broken down by four specific age levels. The topics
you will find on this site includes the U.S. Constitution, how laws are
made, the various branches of the Federal government. Additionally the
site includes several games and links to other government websites created just for kids.
(PBS> PBS Teacher Previews: December 13-19, 1999)
Get a fun and educational introduction to how the U.S. Government works
with Benjamin Franklin as your guide. Access resources, games and
activities organized by age level on topics such as the U.S.
Constitution, how laws are made and the various branches of the Federal government.
(LII> [LIIWEEK] December 6, 1999)
Created by the Government Printing Office, this well-designed site
introduces children to how the government works. It covers the U.S.
Constitution, how laws are made, the branches of government, and
citizenship. The site is divided into sections aimed at age groups K-2,
3-5, 6-8, and 9-12, with a separate section for parents and educators. The
site includes games and activities, has an e-mail function for kids to ask
questions of Ben Franklin (the first public librarian) and provides
extensive links to other government related sites. - nh

APOCALYPSE! (TOP> [students] HomeworkCentral.com December 6th)
--------------------------------
The Public Broadcasting System describes this timely Web site with these words of introduction:
"As the third millennium nears, APOCALYPSE! traces the evolution
of apocalyptic belief throughout the ages-from its origin in the Jewish
experience after the Babylonian exile to its diverse and often
tumultuous expression in modern times."
The Internet and PBS provide an opportunity here to learn the
origins of apocalyptic thought, its influences on Western thought and
art, and the opinions of knowledgeable contemporaries on millennial
beliefs and events. Views and perspectives from historians and Biblical
scholars are included in this rich and fascinating example of the
Frontline series from PBS.

Information Literacy Tutorial (TEACHER> TeachersFirst Update - December 6, 1999)
--------------------------------
We're always on the lookout for Internet tutorials, and the Texas
Information Literacy Tutorial is a great resource for both teachers and
students. Designed to improve students' use of the web for academic
purposes, the tutorial can also provide hesitant teachers with a good
Internet introduction while teaching students the finer points of citing
Internet resources in their work. The narration and animation will hold
students' attention. The tutorial is listed on TeachersFirst's TechTopics page:

Elements of Style
-----------------------
(INNOV> [I.T.] December 4, 1999)
Online clickable version of Strunk’s classic manual for the conventions of
English; lauded as a Bible for writers over the decades, this quick-click
approach to grammar may help keep it popular in the years to come!
(TOP> [students] HomeworkCentral.com December 6th)
In the season of term reports and finals, here is classic assistance
that has guided and rescued students for eight decades. Cornell
University Professor of English William Struck Jr. published
Elements of Style in 1918. The complete version here is a selection
from the Bartleby Library of Great Books Online. In the spirit of the
season, this is Professor Struck's advice:
"It is an old observation that the best writers sometimes disregard
the rules of rhetoric. When they do so, however, the reader will usually
find in the sentence some compensating merit, attained at the cost of
the violation. Unless he is certain of doing as well, he will probably
do best to follow the rules. After he has learned, by their guidance, to
write plain English adequate for everyday uses, let him look, for the
secrets of style, to the study of the masters of literature."

Participez à 2 romans interactifs internationaux (message de Monique Perdrillat)
--------------------------------

The Winter Olympics Games will proceed into 2002 in Salt Lake City in Utah.
The students write about their virtual life so they pretend to be famous
hockey or ski champion teams. They discover the US and the state of Utah and
James Snowball , the coordinator is acting as the manager of the village. The
classes will distribute roles of an Olympic team and will define their own
nation (real or virtual). For example they choose to play and to be athletes
( skier, skater, hockey player...) or staff members (trainer, masseur,
physiotherapist .. ) or journalist or some strange people around .... Salt Lake
city is the Utah state capital, surrounded by mountains that rise to more
than 10,000 feet and reflects a remarkable combination of history, culture
and recreation. The Mormons community is living there. In the canyons and
resorts around, preparations for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games proceed at a
fast pace. There is also a large and growing lodging base: shopping, museum,
university...Your delegation arrives in Salt Lake City and lives in the University of Utah
for one year. Students imagine their life in the Olympic Village. They meet
the neighbours (the other students) and exchange with them. The characters
practice their sport, with their trainer they can use the competition site
and the training center. Current events occur in their virtual daily life .
