Un clin d'oeil à la une cette semaine:  un texte fait d'une compilation d'erreurs acceptées par un correcteur orthographique. Ce texte peut faire l'objet d'un exercice en classe, pour le lire à voix haute et le corriger. Une bonne occasion de montrer aux élèves que le correcteur orthographique ne fait pas tout, même pour les anglophones! Vous trouverez aussi des adresses sur l'Australie et les aborigènes, un site ludique pour abandonner les habitudes addictives***, un autre d'analyse des discours politiques, avec un exercice au prompter à essayer** et un site sur Shakespeare qui le situe bien dans la société actuelle et le contexte théatral*.

One of the problems with Subject directories is that any directory structure is inherently subjective. Someone might think that your categories don't make sense, while they're perfectly sensible to you. One of the benefits of niche directories is that you don't have to make as many macro-level decisions about how you're going to divide up and categorize information. I got to thinking about that when I visited 50states.com

Instead of a clearinghouse of information on the 50 United States of America, I found instead a link directory that's organized in a manner that's almost ideally objective because of the niche it covers. Iowa links belong in Iowa. Wyoming links belong in Wyoming. No one is going to look for Kansas City links in Alaska, because the niche of this directory has a perfect infrastructure -- a listing of fifty states.
>From the front page, choose a state (or a territory.) You'll be taken to a page that both supplies essential information about the state (capital city, area, population, etc.) but you'll also find links to a variety of other stuff -- economic information, political information, license plates, for crying out loud, weather, etc.
This is a great example of a site recognizing a perfect infrastructure and leveraging it by going beyond the standard expected information and providing all kinds of esoteric information. There's also separate sections for birds, flags, state songs --

Eighty years worth of great speeches are captured here, as well as some interesteing excercises for students of speech and American History. The Critics Corner features Richard Nixon's Checkers' Speech, as well as background information, and links within the speech to explain the context of specific words or terms used in the speech. If you watch excerpts of Presidential speeches on tape, you should have students try Could You Be A Politician, where they get a chance to read from a mock teleprompter while looking honest, sincere, and trustworthy. Some trick! Several more activities to liven high school and college classrooms.

- les archives des discours les plus importants, classés par date, malheureusement sans la version sonore, mais accompagné d'informations sur le contexte.
- des 'challenges' qui incitent à une réflexion sur la langue. Saviez-vous que le fameux 'Berliner' de Kennedy signifiait aussi 'a jelly doughnut'? Je l'ai appris dans le premier 'challenge'. Le second propose une réflexion plus poussée sur les figures de style. Il manque un  dictionnaire, mais vous pouvez utiliser le webster ( --> http://www.m-w.com ) dans une autre fenêtre ouverte simultanément, ou un dictionnaire de traduction.
- 'critics' corner' une analyse d'un discours, avec des commentaires ligne à ligne.
