Anacamptis papilionacea subsp. expansa, is the subspecies that can be seen in Provence.

As the type-species, it is also a remarkable plant due to its size and colour. It differs by the large flowers with a particularly wide lip bearing contrasted purplish stripes.

Flowering from April to June.
