Soft Starter

Advantages

Flux Compensated Magnetic Amplifier soft starter are step less reduced voltage starters which ensure a constant low starting current with incremental voltage and torque to the motor to achieve continious and smooth acceleration of the drive.

The soft starter is connected in series with the motor either on the line side or neutral side and thus controls the starting current and starting torque.

As the motor speed increases the FCMA impedance decreases due to the counter emf feedback to achieve incremental voltage and torque for the motor while keeping the current constant.

The voltage across the motor increases smoothly from the starting value (50-70%) to the run value (95-97%) with motor speed.

A built-in bypass device closes to ensure full voltage running of the motor after starting, bypass operation can be time, current or speed based.

 - Starting of motor on minimum limited Current and Power,

 - Amplitude control, Sinusoïdal waveform - No Harmonics,

 - Smooth starting and continious acceleration,

 - Rugged magnetic design - no maintenance,

 - Build in by-pass for full voltage run,

 - Operating at normal ambiant temperature up to 55°C,

 - Designed for no need of air or water cooling system,

 - Motor neutral side connection  (NSC1) possibility :

    . Highly economical,

. Can be located near the motor,

. Easy retrofiting on existing installations,

 - Higher motor life due to less stress,

 - Higher equipment life due to no stress.

 - ER & MC options with NSC1 to reduce generaly

the starting current down to 1,5 x flc.

FCMA Soft Starter connections

The ER / MC options are design to reduce the line current (down to 1.5 x flc) while keeping the motor current sufficietly large for a correct acceleration.

ER (Energy Recovery)

The FCMA main winding is in series with the motor and drops a voltage across itself to limit the motor voltage and motor current. The goal is to used the reactive power store in the FCMA module and inject it in line. The ER winding is magnetically linked with FCMA core and taps part of this energy stored is send back to the line. The fraction of energy that can be tapped is proportional to the voltage drop in the FCMA module and the motor current. This current is in phase opposition to the motor current and hence will directly be deduct to the line current.

MC (Magnetic Compensation)

To further reduce the line current MC winding could be used. The MC winding is magnetically coupled to the main winding and ER winding. Low Voltage compensators are connected to the MC winding and this current is reflected by the ER winding into the line high voltage system. The advantage is to have low voltage compensators and they are in a close circuit with the MC winding so immediatly discharge when not use.
