"After-School Programs-From Vision to Reality" is the latest of eleven
workshops in the CONCEPT TO CLASSROOM series. The workshops are designed for

participants acquire professional development credit.
In this workshop, we look at the benefits that a quality after-school program
can provide to students, their families, and their
community. Participants will examine the aspects involved in creating
effective after-school programs; and they will be directed through a
step-by-step guide designed to help them to create programs that address the
physical, emotional, academic, and social needs of children.
In addition, participants will see examples of successful programs and
activities, discover paths to find funding, and have the opportunity to
explore an interactive tool that helps them determine the strengths and weaknesses of
their individual programs. They will view video clips of students and teachers
in action, as well as professionals in the field who offer their opinions and
advice. They will have access to a resource list that offers a wealth of
information about places to reach out for help in setting up or maintaining an
after-school program.

less than three cents an acre or that William Henry Harrison "was one
of the first U.S. politicians to use false advertizing," campaigning
as a simple man who lived in a log cabin while he had been to medical
school and grown up on a Virginia plantation? Mr. President, a new
Website from the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies,
is studded with these sorts of facts. The site uses a gallery format
to give brief introductions to each of the former US presidents. Five
galleries are arranged chronologically, each containing thumbnails of
famous portraits of eight or nine presidents. Clicking on a thumbnail
brings up a page with an expanded version of the portrait, a brief
quote from and blurb on the president, and a "fast facts" card citing
brief stats. While not an in-depth site, Mr. President is carefully
composed, and everyone should find something of interest when
