The greatest Painting in Britain
The BBC launched this contest last month. Now it is finished, and Turner's "fighting
Temeraire"
won. For all those interested in art, and especially upper intermediate and
advanced art students, you can listen to people who explain why they voted
for a picture, thus describing the picture in details and saying what they
feel watching it. There are no scripts, but all the nominated paintings are

the BBC offers these complete lessons for intermediate students upwards.
This week's subjects are appropriate for economics, science and technology
students, but also to all teachers who want to work on environment or the news.
For each title, you find the recording, the full script, an online quiz, links
to other articles of the same type to learn more, and a very complete lesson
with several worksheets featuring matching exercises, right wrong and a study
of the vocabulary. For exemple, one of the worksheets about the first article
invites the students to match words like increase, fall, fluctuate, rise, pick
up, with a drawing showing an arrow going up or down, etc...

Use Language Lab for oral comprehension
Robert Tuffigo has created this very useful tool : Language lab. You choose
the level and the subject you like, then you can listen to the article, without
script, with a fill-in-the-blank version or with the full script, and then
you can access a quiz and various hot potatoes interactive exercises, but all
the time you have access to the recording of the article.
The themes are numerous and varied. This site is an excellent tool for students
to work and progress on their own, but you can also use it with a whole class.

Do you feel like studying a song with your students? Our colleague Marianne
Lorre on e-teach has made two worksheets for lower intermediates ( depuis les
bons 5èmes jusqu'aux élèves faibles de LP ou de seconde). Most versions of
the lyrics read "f***ing high", but I found the video and lyrics
with '"flying high"...which is more decent to study in class, and
since it is available...

Children's acts of kindness project (from Riverdeep's Classroom Flyer, Thursday, September 22nd)
"Join us in recognizing children's acts of kindness. Let us know when
children in your class should be celebrated for going the extra distance by
being kind to one another. Too many times children's good deeds go unnoticed.
Let this be the first step in their successes! Each month you will submit a
paragraph about one student in your class who performed a 'Random Act of Kindness'.
We will post the child's act and picture (JPEG or GIF), if you wish, to celebrate
him or her. You must send in your entry by the 25th of each month, starting
in September. Hopefully we will give all children the incentive to just be
nice!
