4 - About the mailing list. |
These questions relate directly to the Eva:R mailing list. They include a limited who's who and some technical information about list operation.
|
4:0 - What are the rules? |
There are a few, seven to be exact. We though about making it ten (as in the Ten Commandments, to keep in with the religious overtones, but, as Andrew Hope pointed out, we ended up with the seven deadly sins instead... ;)
|
4:0:0 - What's the first rule? |
DO talk about Eva:R and Eva:R'. The story, the characters, the different multimedia things offered at the Eva:R web site, etc. Off-topic discussions ARE allowed, as long as they have to do with Neon Genesis Evangelion and they haven't been discussed to death before (see [6]). It's up to the list administrator to decide what is acceptable and what is not, but we're fairly tolerant.
|
4:0:1 - What's the second rule? |
DO only post to the list using the account you signed up with - you can change this in your settings (see [4:1]). Otherwise your email will get forwarded to the list maintainer for approval, which Chrissy finds REALLY annoying.
|
4:0:2 - What's the third rule? |
DO NOT spam.
|
4:0:3 - What's the fourth rule? |
DO NOT flame other list users.
|
4:0:4 - What's the fifth rule? |
DO NOT use excessive profanity. Keep it clean. We're not prudes before you ask.
|
4:0:5 - What's the sixth rule? |
DO post your own multimedia if you want. Fanfics, art, ideas, etc. Just remember that some people have slow connections. If your file is large please try and put it somewhere where people can download it, rather than posting it to the mailing list.
There is a shared files directory for the mailing list which we may let you use for Eva:R related material if you have no server space of your own, but the space is limited (about 5MB) and we may have to remove it after a while. And some people have trouble accessing it...
Bear in mind that it is not hard to get hold of server space for free, try Xoom or GeoCities. You do not need direct FTP access to update these sites, you can do it via the web.
|
4:0:6 - What's the seventh rule? |
DO have fun! This list is meant to be a fun thing.
|
4:1 - How do I change my settings on the mailing list? |
The easiest way to control your list account is though the web. Go to http://www.egroups.com to access the Members Centre. There you can access the archives, subscribe and unsubscribe, set your preferences, etc...
If you've joined the list, you have an account there. Just click on the "My EGroups" button to log in and bring up a list of the lists you are subcribed to. If you don't know your password (you are assigned a random one automatically if you join via email) you can get it mailed to you in a few minutes. If you haven't already joined the list when you go there, you'll get to create a new account for yourself.
|
4:1:0 - How do I subscribe? |
Either sign up on the main index on the Eva:R website, sign up for "eva-r" at http://www.egroups.com or send an email to eva-r-subscribe@egroups.com.
|
4:1:1 - How do I unsubscribe? |
Either unsubscribe from "eva-r" at http://www.egroups.com or send an email to eva-r-unsubscribe@egroups.com. Of course, we hope you won't do this. If the enormous amount of mail is getting you down, try the digest setting (see [4:1:2]).
|
4:1:2 - How do I receive a weekly digest instead of individual emails? |
Either change your settings for "eva-r" at http://www.egroups.com or send an email to eva-r-digest@egroups.com.
|
4:1:3 - How do I receive individual emails instead of a weekly digest? |
Either change your settings for "eva-r" at http://www.egroups.com or send an email to eva-r-normal@egroups.com.
|
4:1:4 - How do I contact the list maintainer? |
Send an email to eva-r-owner@egroups.com. This should only be used to report flamers, problems, etc.
|
4:2 - What's with these previews? |
From time to time Maher posts snippets from upcoming episodes to the list. You are invited to comment and speculate.
|
4:3 - Who are all these people? |
The mailing list has 68 members at the last count (check the eva-r page at http://www.egroups.com for the latest figure), and has evolved a few notable characters. Not all of them keep their email open all day, but they certainly post a lot when they are on.
It should be pointed out that the people listed below are NOT any kind of final authority (except Maher) and don't necessarily know any better than a newbie or a lurker. Their opinions are their own, not anyone else's. They just post a lot, so you'll get to know/love/hate/despise them, BELIEVE me! The Mad Theory Offshoot Of Daath puts it quite nicely:
"I've learned more from this list then I've taught (accomplishing what I suspected from the start). Quite frankly, many of the people below (myself included) should be blamed for putting much of the spam on this list that detracts from the overall discussion. The listeners deserve more credit then the talkers do. If there are as many as I am led to believe (35? 25? 10? 5? 1?) then they deserve credit for not exploding and sending all of us death threats for being incompetent."
However, it's traditional to have a list of characters for a newsgroup, mailing list or IRC channel, so sorry Mad... ;)
|
4:3:0 - Who is Chrissy? |
Christina Woog (spy_princess@hotmail.com). The list administrator and the voice of Rei Ayanami in Eva:R. Do NOT be mean to her. ;) Was the most... er... VOCAL(!) fan in Eva:R's early days. Her homepage is at http://www.poeticillusion.com and she's American.
And if you make her cry, you'll get banned... and, well, we'll kill you! ;)
|
4:3:1 - Who is alsamkmt/Chronos? |
Maher Al-Samkari (alsamkmt@flyernet.udayton.edu). The man himself, the author of Eva:R. He's American.
|
4:3:2 - Who is Subi? |
Sam Brown (subi@gameart.com). The FAQ maintainer, coder & artist. His homepage is at http://www.gameart.com/4ca and he's English.
|
4:3:3 - Who is Chris? |
Chris Voutsis (cvoutsis@hotmail.com). Co-author (along with his brother Alex) of some alternative Eva:R' episodes (see [3:3]). He's Australian.
|
4:3:4 - Who is The Cabbit? |
Andrew Ferguson (ferguson@isn.net). He is... the Cabbit (don't ask). He doesn't suffer from insanity, he enjoys every minute of it. If you want to know what a cabbit is, go check a Tenchi Muyo FAQ. Founder of the #eva-r channel on DALNet. Canadian.
|
4:4 - Why are there so many Australians on this mailing list?! |
Um. Er. Ah. All right, we don't know. It just seems to be one of those things. Apparently Neon Genesis Evangelion is very big in Australia, it's even been shown on SBS (Australian commercial TV channel). Spectre (another Australian) says:
"It has to do with the fact that Australia has a very wide range of cultural and ethnic groups, I think. For example, Melbourne is the second most cosmopolitan city in the world." (me, I disagree, I say Birmingham UK - Subi ;) "There's just not as much appeal within the general public in the US for anime series in general, especially compared with Australia."
Those of us who live in the Northern Hemisphere think that anyone who lives in Australia must find the whole concept of the Second Impact very worrying indeed. Maybe that's the fascination... ;)
Besides, it's only the vocal subscribers that we know for sure about (Subi gets depressed when he thinks he's the only UK subscriber, mostly because he's never awake when any of the others are... ;). Please take the time to fill out your account details at http://www.egroups.com so we know more about each other, but be warned that anyone can see them if they choose to look.
