6 - Non-Eva:R related questions.
These are questions that have nothing to do with Eva:R, yet crop up with considerable regularity on the mailing list, so it's worth at least mentioning them, if only so people know what not to talk about. This section assumes you know the entire Neon Genesis Evangelion story, people who don't know at least the main concepts will find it a bit unforgiving.

We encourage you all to read the Neon Genesis Evangelion FAQ and the Red Cross Booklet (we all have), both of which could once be found at http://members.xoom.com/EbonScythe/ (but not anymore), before posting non-Eva:R mails to the list. We DO allow non-Eva:R related questions (see [4:0:0]), but some topics really have been thrashed about so many times we don't want to go over them EVER again. You can read the results in the mailing list archives at http://www.egroups.com.

Essentially, if a question is listed here, DON'T ask it!
6:0 - Where can I find other fanfics based on Neon Genesis Evangelion?
You've got a nerve. ;) But all right. A good place to start is the SDAT Neon Genesis Evangelion fanfic database run by Andre Garde at http://members.xoom.com/superdat/. However, since this has not been updated since July 1999, Platypus3333, Nargrath and SkyBladeX have designed a new version called evaFiction, which you can find at http://evafiction.animecenter.com/. THIS is the most up-to-date source of Neon Genesis Evangelion fiction on the net. Platypus3333 and Nargrath have vowed to continue Andre Garde's good work until he returns, so any NGE-based fanfics should be submitted to their site, rather than Andre's. Don't forget to post it to news://rec.arts.anime.creative as well. ;)

Of particular note, and referred to quite a bit on the Eva:R mailing list, is Andrew Huang's spoof Neon Genesis Evanjellydonut.

For all you lemonheads (ha! We made a funny! "Here's to you Mrs. Robinson..." ;) out there, SDAT and evaFiction also have them. But remember what we said (see [3:1:0]). Also, people of a sensitive disposition should beware of Shinji The 10 O'clock Assassins' lemons!
6:1 - Where can I get English subbed/dubbed copies of Gainax's Neon Genesis Evangelion movies (Death / Rebirth / End Of Evangelion) from?
Manga Entertainment obtained the rights for the English translation of the Neon Genesis Evangelion movies around July 1999. According to Tiffany Grant they intend to use the same voice cast as AD Vision did for the English dub of the TV series, which would be great.

If you can't wait, you may be able to get a fan version. The following list was obtained from The Anime Fan and Fansubber Resource Network (http://www.fansubs.net) and is a list of all fan versions of the various incarnations of Neon Genesis Evangelion. We've included the TV series here as well, in case it is not officially available in your country, or you live somewhere without any copyright laws. ;)

However, it should be noted that, if an official version is available to you, any respectable fansubber will not provide you with their "unlicensed" versions.

Also, when contacting fansubbers, and indeed whenever you buy video tapes from outside your own country, remember the difference between PAL and NTSC formats. You cannot play tapes recorded in one format on a VCR that solely supports the other. And fansubbing is something of a legal grey area anyway...

6:2 - Where can I find images of the original series / manga / CD covers / etc.?
Try one of the billion or so Neon Genesis Evangelion picture archives out there. A good place to start is the Anime Web Turnpike (http://www.anipike.com) which has a section devoted to Neon Genesis Evangelion links, and the AnimeArchive (http://the.animearchive.org/real_index.html) has quite a few images, plus links to more galleries.
6:3 - Who killed Kaji?

We don't know. Our money's on Pen-Pen. ;)
6:4 - Did anyone notice that all the characters in Neon Genesis Evangelion are named after Japanese battleships?
This is the most common question, and has been known to produce mild abuse directed against the sender (which is a no-no - see [4:0:3]). Remember you're dealing with a group of SERIOUS Neon Genesis Evangelion fanatics here!

The facts are that Hideaki Anno (the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion) named many of the original series characters after World War II Imperial Japanese Navy ships or classes of ships. As to why he chose to do this, only he knows. The most likely reason is that he was just stuck for names and used a varient of a trick many writers use: Using real placenames for fictional surnames and real surnames for fictional placenames. Plus, there is the following quote from an interview he gave, the English transcript of which can be found in the back of the first collection of the English translation of the Neon Genesis Evangelion manga:

"By the way, Shinji's name came from a friend of mine, Misato's name came from the hero of a manga. The name Ritsuko came from a friend of mine in middle school. I borrowed from everywhere. Even names that have no bearing on anything actually came from the countless rules that govern these things. It might be fun if someone with free time could research them."

Someone with more than us, certainly. ;) Anyway, here are the details, taken from the Neon Genesis Evangelion FAQ (http://members.xoom.com/EbonScythe/, but not anymore):

AkagiAkagi Class Aircraft Carrier
AobaHeavy Cruiser
AyanamiFubuki Class Destroyer
FuyutsukiAkizuki Class Destroyer
HyugaBattleship
IbukiAircraft Carrier
KatsuragiUnryu Class Aircraft Carrier
SoryuSoryu Class Aircraft Carrier

In addition the following names are based on nautical terms:

IkariAnchor (but also means "hatred" - see Eva:R episode 38)
KajiRudder
RokubungiSextant
KeelThe major piece of timber that forms the hull of a ship and,
oddly enough, the name of the university Subi attended... ;)

Asuka's American surname is also named after a ship, fittingly enough from the US Navy:

LangleyAircraft Carrier (named after an aircraft pioneer, c. 1900)

However, none of the original characters in Eva:R are named after ships (see [2:2]).
6:5 - Which happened, TV episodes 25 and 26 or End Of Evangelion?
As far as we're concerned, only the television episodes (see [2:6]).
6:6 - What is "Kom Susser Todd"?
A song that plays in End Of Evangelion during the beginning of instrumentality, it's on the End Of Evangelion soundtrack. The literal meaning of the phrase (which is German) is "come, sweet death".
6:7 - Where can I find scripts for the Movies/Director's Cuts of Neon Genesis Evangelion?
EvaOtaku USED to have details of the Directors Cuts of the televsion series at http://members.tripod.com/~EvaOtaku/detour.html, and there was a script of End Of Evangelion on the Neon Genesis Evangelion FAQ page at http://members.xoom.com/EbonScythe/, but those sites appear to have vanished. If anyone knows if the info is available anywhere else, let us know please!
6:8 - ANY question related to the argument between the television ending and the movies.
Don't go there. Not on the Eva:R mailing list anyway.

Subi has written a +3000 word answer to the question "Why did Gainax do End of Evangelion?", which you can find here.
6:9 - Which is better, sub or dub?
Which would you prefer, a broken arm or a broken leg? ;)
