Lived at Clough Water, County Antrim, Ireland, near Ballymena. Articlesmentioning him on pages 200 and 195 of "Heritage History of ChesterCounty, South Carolina", 1982. Grandson of Jean Gaston, a French Huguenotwho fled from France to Scotland during the middle of the seventeenthcentury. Several sons of Jean moved from Scotland to County Antrim,Ireland, during the 1660's. One of them was John Gaston, who appears onthe hearth-money rate list for Ireland in 1669 as a resident ofMagheragall, County Antrim. One family tale of Jean Gaston that survivesis of the worst language his children ever heard him use. When he hurthis mouth with a table fork, an implement just coming into use, heexclaimed, "Devil take the fork!" More research needed to discoverWilliam Gaston's parents, though.
Page 235 of "Heritage History of Chester County, South Carolina, Vol.II", 1995, says that William Gaston (1685-1770), born and died inIreland, was the son of John Gaston, born 1645, who was the son of JeanGaston, and one of three brothers who settled in Ballymena, CountyAntrim, Ireland. The other two brothers were William Gaston, born in1642, and Alexander Gaston, born about 1648. Page 72 of "TheRevolutionary Soldiers of Catholic Presbyterian Church Chester, SouthCarolina", 1978, by Mary Wylie Strange, calls him "of Clough Water,Ireland".

1. James STOUT, my 3rd great-grandfather, was born 2 Feb 1796. He died 10Jul 1854. We know very little about this ancestor. There is a land deedfor a James Stout dated 9 Dec 1829 in Clark County, Ohio. We do know thatour James Stout was in that county for sure in the 1830.
James was living in Clark County, Ohio in the early 1830s when his sonsJames and George W. were born - Frank Dickson, 1975. Frank states thatthis information is from a bible in possession of Gwen Gaston, Goshen,Indiana, granddaughter of Matilda Jennie Stout Gaston. The bible statesthat James died at age 58 y ears, 5 months, 8 days.
James married Susannah Agathea LANZANTHY, my 3rd great-grandmother, on 23June 1820 in Ross County, Ohio. Virginia Stout of the Ross CountyGenealogical Society states that there is a record of James Stoutmarrying a Susan Sagathy on 25 June 1820 in that county. The hand-writingon the original record looks like Sagathy.
Susannah was born 1 Jan 1797. She died 19 Aug 1882 at the age of 85. MaryAnn Moore, her daughter-in-law, stated: I saw my husband's mother onceand she was a very small person and a little Dutch woman. She spoke sobrokenly that I could hardly understand her.

Below is a letter written by Rebecca Latimer of New Jersey to JosephGaston of Chester County, SC. He was my grandmother's great-grandfather.The letter was probably written about 1833. It is a reply to a letterwritten to her by Joseph Gaston in 1832 or 1833. Based on the info Ihave, Rebecca Latimer was a grand-daughter of Hugh Gaston and her motherwas Martha Gaston who married James Ross.
Here is the letter:
"My esteemed friend's letter came to hand in due time. I shall commencewith my grand-mother from my earliest recollection of her.
"All her children were married, save Mary, her youngest daughter, andThomas, her youngest son; Hugh having died some years previous.
"My grand-mother received, at that time, the profits of a farm, formerlyher father's, and about fifteen pounds, British money, from a fund forPresbyterian Clergymen's widows.
"My uncle Thomas was at that time, emigrating to America. He lived in NewYork, for many years. Married there, and died there; leaving twodaughters. One of these died, as
did the mother, also; the other, now Mrs. Lindsay, of Orange, NewJersey. My aunt Mary died unmarried.
"William Gaston, referred to in your letter, became Surgeon in a Guineamerchant ship, and died on the coast of Africa.
"Alecia, the eldest daughter, married a Mr. Nelson, and died about eightyears since, without issue.
"Martha, my mother, married James Ross a linen draper, to whom she hadfour children. James Ross, her eldest son, came to America, and remainednine years; he then returned to the old country, married his cousin, andhas four children. He is a spirit merchant, in Londonderry, in the Northof Ireland. My oldest sister, is the mother of ten or eleven children,some of whom, are settled in Baltimore.
"My youngest brother, Hugh Gaston Ross, came to this country in ---, wasengaged on the side of the Americans during the late war, and was safeafter the Peace, but we never heard of him after 1817.
"I am the youngest child, was married fifteen years ago, and bore afamily, but they are all gone to rest. My husband held a situation in theCustom department, of the government, but growing disgusted with theGovernment, throw up his commission, and came to this land of liberty,where his heart had been for many years.
"Stephen's mother and family are in Indiana, where we intend to remove bythe first of May.
"To return to my mother's family. James Gaston, the child next to her,married and had eight children. Most of them, with himself, and wife,have fallen asleep.
"My aunt, Mrs. Aliza, was married to Surgeon Rogan, and had eightchildren, of whom six were girls; one of these, died unmarried, and onemarried my brother James, mentioned the the former part of this letter.The oldest son is an eminent physician, living in Londonderry. The eldestdaughter, and the youngest son, are yet unmarried. One of her youngersons, died last November year, leaving a widow and five children, amplyprovided for.

He and his wifeMary moved to Indianapolis, IA where his brother James had alreadylocated about 1854 or 1855. He died 7 Jul 1911 in Rose Hill, Mahaska, IAand was buried 9 Jul 1911 in Rose Hill Cemetery."
History of Mahaska County, p. 669, states: "G. W. Stout. Proprietor ofUnion House, Rose Hill. Born in Clark County, Ohio in 1834. Came to Iowain 1855 and settled in this county. Engaged in his present business in1873. He married Mary Moore in 1853*. She was born in Licking County,Ohio in 1834*. They have seven children... Republican." (*Contradictsother sources for dates.)

"His family moved to Rose Hill six weeks after their son Edward was born.George operated The Union House Hotel in 1876 in Rose Hill, Iowa (untilit burned). His family belonged to the Campbellite Church. George was amember of the IOOF lodge in Rose Hill. It is thought that he drankheavily early in his life and the family suffered from this. Bu t he quitsuddenly before the turn of the century. He raised fancy poultry andproduced show birds - Plymouth Rock chickens - at county and statefairs, and was a judge of poultry.
"The Stouts tend to be very small people. All of George 's children werephysically small. Maggie was no larger than an average 12 year-old and mymother (Mary Alice) weighed 90 pounds when she was married. James Stout'schildren were of average size, however.
"Whether George and his brother James were of English or Dutch descent Ido not know, but I do remember my grandmother Mary Moore Stout havingtold me many years ago that she saw her husband's mother once and thatshe was a very little "Dutch" woman who spoke English so brokenly thatshe could hardly understand what she said.
"George suffered a vocal paralysis a few years before his death and couldnot speak. He was also in a wheelchair. I pushed his chair downtown tothe bank, etc. many times. He died at his home surrounded by his family."

"G. W. Stout sent a team to the Currier Mill and when near RobertMcKanna's crossing the hand car came along, scaring them and they startedto run away, throwing little Eddie Stout out, cutting quite a gash in hishead. The lines caught in some manner and the driver could not managethem. George Stout jumped out and let them run. They ran into the wirefence, cutting both horses and mashing the spring wagon all to pieces. Itwas a narrow escape for the boys."

"G. W. St out took first and second premiums at the county fair on BlackLongahan. This was his first trial and he got there. We share hisadventures in this paper. He has some fine chickens that are standardbreed."

"G. W. Stouts Ninth Annual Catalogue has just been issued to the Herald's Job Office and is a fine one. It is well named "Big Four". That is thenumber of varieties he will breed this season. They are all prize winnersand W. S. Russell (Iowa's popular poultry judge) has scored every bird.Anyone buying eggs from George this season gets the same from the pensthat he raises his prize winners from, and he keeps none but the highestscoring birds."
Apparently at one of the fairs, George saw a rooster that was going tobeat his, so he bought it . Sure enough it placed first and his placedsecond.
When he got older he had a stroke and lost his voice. He kept a cane byhis bedside and when he wanted something he would take his cane and knockeverything off of the table.
George's death certificate indicates that he died of exhaustion andstarvation due to progressive Bulbar Paralysis several years. Informantwas Jennie Gaston. Signed by W. W. Wright, MD.
