Infonews n°146 du 24/02/2002
~~~~~~~~ Sommaire ~~~~~~~~
Dear colleagues,
Today, a new version of Infonews, with my comments in English.You are
now over 520 English teachers to read Infonews, and some members from
Germany, the Netherlands or Canada will find it easier to read it all in
English. If it is an inconvenience to any of you, please let me know!
This week, you'll find : first some news from the Winter Olympics,
then some resources for primary schools, including the very interesting
Renault security contest and a correspondence with Australia. Then, an
article presenting Pawnshops, interactive websites about the Grand Canyon,
addresses about "Lord of the Rings", and websites for secondary school
teachers. Then you'll discover Video and audio resources to buy, how to
make the best of BBC programs, freebies from the British Embassy in France,
and the last call for communication for Cyber-Langues 2002.
Have a nice week!
It's Olympic time again, and performance-enhancing drugs are
back in the news. Find out what types of drugs athletes use,
what their side effects are and how they're tested for.
[ A site you can use in upper secondary school to explore from a technical
and clinical point of view the drugs the athletes use in competition. You
can work with the biology or gym teacher, or encourage the pupils to work
on their own on the subject, and make a presentation to the class. Un site
utile dans le cadre des TPE en lycée.]
Resources for Primary School
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Road Safety for All
-------------------------
A competition for primary school children (aged 7 to 11). It is offered in
English, French and German so you can use both your native language and
English.
http://www.safety-for-all.com/competition_2001/instructions/index.htm
In each section, you'll find worksheets to download. They can be used in
primary school or in lower secondary. You'll find easy questionnaires with
questions like : "how do you go to school?" (by bus, on rollers?).
Germany is not one of the countries taking part in the competition, but
Switzerland is, so there is also a version in german at:
www.sicherheit-fuer-alle.ch
And if you decide to take part, and your project is chosen, you will be
invited to the finale in Disneyland Paris, in June 2002!
On the website, you can also find games, which are easy and visual and can
be a good starting point for a discussion:
http://www.safety-for-all.com/kids/index.htm
Postcards around Australia Project
-------------------------
Students participating in Postcards Around Australia will travel
around all Australian states, visiting one coastal town/region and
one outback town/region on their virtual trip. They will send an
electronic postcard from each of the 14 locations to their email partner.
http://www.beenleigss.qld.edu.au/postcards/index.html
[Register, and receive virtual postards from all over Australia. An
opportunity for your pupils to communicate with australian students of
their age, preferably on a one to one basis, and to explore Australia
(English and geography)]

If you're looking for a fast loan or a TV for next-to-nothing,
the pawnshop's the place to go. Learn all about the rules and
practices of pawnbroking!
[ for upper secondary school. A special cultural fact the pupils have
certainly never considered....]

Grand Canyon
~~~~~~~~~~~
interactive trip (Josiane Laval)
--------------------
http://deil.lang.uiuc.edu/travelsim/gc.html
The students have a budget, and they have to make choices of
transportation, lodgings and activities. On their way, they can see
pictures or videos of a raft trip on Colorado River (note: the address has
changed, it is now : http://www.oars.com/htdocs/grandcanyon/
). They have
to read and understand english, and they have fun at the same time!
Josiane Laval has tried this with her students in a vocation school. She said :
" It all went fine : everyone, including the quickest and the weakest, have
enjoyed it and worked very well. I had prepared a worksheet for them to
keep track of their choices, so that we could discuss it in class later.
One of them insisted on sending the postcard to his girlfriend instead of
me. I was allowed to read it, and i accepted. He was so happy!
It was thrilling to see they feel sorry because they couldn't afford to
travel by plane or book in the luxurious hotel.....Some of them even
insisted on coming back to the computer room after the lesson : "I haven't
had time to go to the rafting site. I have to do it this time!"
site du National Park Service (Phil benz)
-------------------------
www.nps.gov
On this website, you will find links to all National parks. For each,
you'll have infos about how to get there, what to see, the accomodations
and the activities. You can easily build a webquest similar to the one above.
For Grand Canyon national park, see:
http://www.nps.gov/grca/index.htm
Virtual Tour (from Barbara Dieu)
-------------------------
for a virtual tour of the grand canyon, visit
http://members.tripod.com/USAConnection/Williams/Williams.htm
You will see photos of our students going down ( a 9 hour walk, Bright
Angel Trail, Indian Garden ) in 1998, and a text of general presentation.
