How Disney refused it
--------------------------
from Washington Post : "'Fahrenheit 9/11' Too Hot for Disney?"

from Movies.com : "Disney Blocks Release of Fahrenheit 9/11"
http://movies.go.com/news/2004/5/fahrenheitissues050504.html

Explanation of the title
--------------------------
in BBC : "The title comes from Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451, about a
future where books are burned and trivial information is prized above
knowledge and wisdom. "

Michael Moore's official site
--------------------------
His official site was much more violent last year. From wild and acerb
criticism, it has become very official and the tone and even the look of
the page is much more tamed.... but still efficient!
http://www.michaelmoore.com

Links to News from Michael Moore's site
--------------------------
On the site, you find a window offering links to "real news". Here is where
you see how Moore works, with a constant mixture of hoax and truth,
propaganda and information, real events and biased or bent ones....Among
thoselinks to News, you find that :
- some are really real, like The Guardian, or BBC
- some are engaged and meant to make people aware of the real situation,
like AlterNet (for advanced, mature students)
"AlterNet's online magazine provides a mix of news, opinion and
investigative journalism.
Millions of people, despite leading busy lives, are concerned about the
direction of our country and its policies. We are hungry for the
trustworthy, stimulating and value-driven information we need to create
change. Good policies, and especially good changes to bad policies, require
mobilizing concerned citizens." (from the site)
This site uses a language that may sometimes shock, but the reasoning is
meant to help people open their eyes and understand what's going on. Read
for example this article about publishing the photos of torture in Irak :
"Watching Blood and Gore" By Richard Goldstein
http://www.alternet.org/story.html?StoryID=18758
- some are weird, like the Onion http://www.theonion.com/ with rude
language and unbelievable stories : the site is not advised for under 18,
but this article is ok, and gives an idea of how news can be different or
manipulated. Read:
"New Prescription-Only Sandwich Extra Delicious"
http://www.theonion.com/news/index.php?issue=4020

violence and hatred have grown ( even for beginners!)

Michael Moore

Ray Bradbury's Farenheit 451
--------------------------
Because many students won't know where the title of the film come from,
here are some sites about this novel where you can find summaries and study
guides.
http://www.webenglishteacher.com/bradbury.html
http://www.bookrags.com/guides/fahrenheit451/
- On Pink Monkey.com, you can read : "Throughout the book, the key Themes
of conformity, apathy,
stagnancy and censorship are shown in a variety of ways." interesting,
isn't it?
http://www.pinkmonkey.com/booknotes/monkeynotes/pmFar45137.asp
- in the "Classic Notes", you can read : "Fahrenheit 451 uses the genre of
science fiction, which was enjoying immense popularity at the time of the
books publication, as a vehicle for his message that oppressive government,
left unchecked, can do irreparable damage to society by limiting the
creativity and freedom of it's people. In particular, the "dystopia" motif
popular in science fiction - that of a futuristic technocratic and
totalitarian society that demands order and harmony at the expense of
individual rights - serves the novel well. "
http://www.gradesaver.com/ClassicNotes/Titles/fahrenheit/about.html
Note that it is described as a dystopia, so you can take the opportunity to
introduce this notion.
dystopia : (from Webster) an imaginary place where people lead dehumanized
and often fearful lives, also called "anti-utopia".

The U.S. Record 2003-2004 ([LII New This Week] May 20)
--------------------------
[this document] highlights U.S. efforts to promote human rights and
democracy in the 101 countries and entities with the worst human rights
records, taking care to include those countries of concern for
'extrajudicial killings, torture and other serious violations of human

US moves to ban furtive photos
--------------------------
New camera phones induce new behaviours, such as taking illicit photos
without permission, or invading people's privacy. Japan, Italy and now the
US try to impose control through laws and bans.

--------------------------
"Although the campaign commercials featured in The Living-Room Candidate
reflect the “look” and production techniques of the time in which they were
made, it is also true that there are remarkable thematic similarities among
ads from different years.
The thematic groups on the left consist of related commercials from
different campaigns. Also included is a selection of highlights, one from
each election cycle." (from the site)

Key Data on Information and Communication Technology in Schools in Europe

--------------------------
scolaire – IEA)."
