'Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego'. Plus des sites de webcams et de
musées.
Bonne semaine à tous!

TRAUMA CHANGES THE BRAINS OF CHILDREN (USA Ed.Net Briefs, May 31)
--------------------------------
Flashbacks that occur after trauma are known clinically as post-traumatic
stress symptoms. Even more common are disorienting fears, inability to
focus or trouble sleeping. Most child witnesses to violence in America live
in inner cities where shootings occur repeatedly and parents often are as
traumatized by them as children. Recent breakthroughs in brain research
have revealed alarming dimensions to the problem. Particularly for young
children, traumatic experiences can alter the developing brain's anatomy
and chemistry in ways that inhibit learning, concentration, attachment,
even empathy. In some cases, the change can predispose children to
impulsive violence in later life. Research shows that the traumatized brain
stores sensory reminders of horror in combination with the neurochemical
reactions they triggered. Sights, sounds and smells associated with the
danger can trigger the fear reaction before rational thought can intervene.
For most victims of trauma, these symptoms subside with time. But the
younger the witnesses, the more intimate their losses and the more it
occurs, the longer changes can persist and the more profound the toll on
overall mental and emotional health. There is considerable debate about the
effects of trauma on the brain, yet recent research findings are redefining
violence in America as a public-health threat that takes its gravest toll
on the 5 million children who witness or experience traumatizing violence
every year.

child's" as published in The Seattle Times, May 21, 1999, A2)

INCREASING FOCUS ON "CHARACTER EDUCATION" IN SCHOOLS (USA Ed.Net Briefs 6.7.99)
--------------------------------
The nation's public schools are under growing pressure to offer ethics
instruction as a way to promote safe learning free of harassment. The
pressure on schools for what the National Association of School Boards
describes as "character education" has been building through the 1990's
because of the increase in the number of working parents and concerns about
the influence of television and music. Recent school violence and the
Supreme Court ruling on sexual harassment by students have given the issue
more urgency. Esther F. Schaeffer, executive director of the Character
Education Partnership, a six year old nonpartisan coalition in Washington
that promotes the teaching of values, said opinion surveys show that
Americans overwhelmingly want their schools to teach basic values like
honesty, respect and responsibility. Objections about the nature of public
moral education used to come most often from liberals who objected to the
conservative Christian influence they detected. But in recent years it has
come more from conservatives who say schools are promoting values like
feminism and one-world government.
