Back
from Maschinenfest 2005
!
English version
On
aimer !
SYNAPSCAPE
la nuit, et sont des valeurs sûres du festival ;
On retourne
les voir à Anvers samedi
8 octobre pour le showcase SPECTRE au
LUCHTBAL.
L'autre
background grindcore.
On passe
« industriels ».
Allez,
c'est décidé, on revient encore l'année
prochaine !
JapNoise
We're just back from the annual Grand
Party, and the 2005 vintage was memorable once again, maybe
even better than the previous edition. This year we had no
longer anything to fear from the venue, and we were quite
ready to enjoy again the comfort of
KuFa.
Regarding
the line-up, a greater diversity and more daring choices
from the organizers provided us with a well-balanced
experience, with
the sounds ranging from industrial to breakcore,
electronica, dark-ambient and even power-noise, and a bunch of
really exciting newcomers.
Friday
night
The
party opened with AZ ROTATOR, a new breakcore project signed
on Ad Noiseam; he started his set progressively, evolving from
a melodic form of breakcore to more punchy beats, the constant
being his warped and twisted but precise sound. A fantastic
beginning!
EMPUSAE
followed and he was truly feeling incredible. His inspired
tracks (a few of which from his latest Hands release) and the
flow of emotions seeping through his music won over the
growing and enthusiastic audience ; from here we simply knew
that Mfest 2005 was going to be quite
enjoyable.
CONTAMINANT,
a new band signed on Plitchkaupf, sounded OK if anything else,
but not having attended his whole set, we couldn't give more
details regarding his performance.
Then it was EDGEY's turn to gain the
respect of the
dancing audience with his classic breakcore loops: his music
turned out to be quite in your face but well-balanced, not
quite as subtle as AZ ROTATOR's, but it did the
trick.
We
won't bother to report on MENTAL DESTRUCTION, who were a bit
of a joke (isn't there a resting home anywhere for pathetic
industrial past glories
??)
We
came back for more consistent music with ISZOLOSCOPE, who gave
all he had in store: a powerful sound, and intense industrial beats, in
the style and tradition of his label
ANT-ZEN.
Then
it was ARCHITECT's turn to enchant us with a more powerful sound
than ever before, remisniscent of GRIDLOCK on steroids; truly
fantastic!
We
don't have much to say about PUNCH INC: 2 tracks were enough
to drive us out to the bar. His stuff is just too heavy, and
not interesting enough for our liking. But we can understand why
some people actually like it.
SYNAPSCAPE were the same as ever:
loud and lively if you like them, loud and boring if you
don't; whatever the case, isn't it time they
evolved somehow ?
ORPHX ended this first night, and they proved once again that
they're cornerstones of the Fest. They provided strangely
energetic trance-like beats, moving closer to techno than the
slow experimental loops we were used to hear on their previous
albums; their performance reminded me of a faster and dancier
version of VROMB, and they had a similar hypnotic quality.
This set launched the release of their new album on
Hands.
Saturday
Night
The
new SPECTRE duet LOSS gave us the first mega kick of the
festival; generally speaking, the openers this year were not
to be missed, as they were the most exciting discoveries. LOSS
used an MS20 on stage , generating incredible analogue sounds,
and they
delivered
inspiring, dark, often tortured music, sometimes
accompanied by
scorched
vocals (reminiscent of MAGO's most desperate songs).
These guys dare to take chances with their machines live, and
their feelings are definitely their most effective
weapons.
We
didn't know them before Mfest, and we're already big
fans . We're going to see them again at Antwerp 's
Luchtbal on
October 8th , for the SPECTRE
showcase.
LAPSED
were another find, with their unusual groovy sound (unusual
for Mfest standards). We're not sure whether they got the
response they deserve from Mfest crowds, but we advise you to
lend an attentive ear to their self-titled release on AD
NOISEAM, it's simply fabulous.
The
following project SKET sounded a bit bland with their
impersonal industrial rhythms. Same thing with ATROX and their
uninteresting would-be power noise set. We've heard similar
stuff about a
zillion times before..
ENDUSER
pumped back some quality into the evening , and literally set
the dance floor on fire with his ultra-powerful sound and his
roaring mammouth bass. He made us think of a more subtle
version of PANACEA . ENDUSER mashes up all sorts of
influences, from drum'n'bass to breakcore, ragga , jungle and
even hip-hop. This was quite daring at Mfest, but it proved
infectious and entranced the audience.
Then
came BRIGHTER DEATH NOW, who were anxiously awaited by some
part of the audience who only came for CMI bands. Although
we've always enjoyed their recordings, we didn't think much of
their performance: it seems that the project has lost some of
its intensity over the years.
Then
at midnight came two of the hottest bands, famous for working the dance
floor into a frenzy: POW(D)ER PUSSY and the infamous ROGER
ROTOR. Neither of them disappointed us, whether it be the
former's ethnic industrial techno or the latter's irresistible
industrial grooves. Our feet are still aching from their
sets.
KLANGSTABIL came next, one of
ANT-ZEN least typical projects, and with them came a phase of
shocking tension, as people either love them or hate them.
Their work shows much sincerity, and their chanted vocals
unleashed a feeling of
bitter despair.
The
second night ended with SONAR; we went home after KLANGSTABIL
so we don't have anything to say about them, but is it still
necessary to comment yet another of their classic performance
?
Sunday
night
4PM
: not the best of times to endure a radical, in your face
performance by KIRDEC + ELEKORE, but still, we'd scream for
more even at breakfast time. It was breakcore again, but in
the true, epileptic, frenzied, manic and exhilarating sense of
the word. The biggest surprise came from MARCO, who spent the
first half of the set quietly working behind his laptop, but
suddenly jumped out to the front, transforming into a furious
stage devil, screaming at the top of his lungs in the best
grind core tradition, while frantically rolling on the floor.
The alchemy worked wonders. The unsuspecting audience ended up
confronted with
CDRK jumping around more than ever while pumping
out his mashed-up
rhythms from behind his own laptop, and a possessed singer
howling distorted vocals along sampled guitar riffs. We
urgently need this on CD !!!
Next
came RASPUTIN, who were funny but
dispensable.
6PM,
3rd day of the festival; KOM-INTERN, the only French project
this year, came
on stage. Christophe played along with a percussionist
on pads, thus giving more humanity to his electronic beats.
And this concert was highly enjoyable for us, all the more
since we were infinitely impressed by his most excellent
recent CD release.
The same hypnotic trance overcame us then. KOM-INTERN's
music is truly possessed.
After
such a set, we found it hard to totally immerse in the dark
and frozen ambient sound of KRAKEN. The way they work was
strange to see, as they were both lying in the floor with their
instruments. The sonic material they provide is beautiful:
they scrape metal sheets and work the sound live; they also
use a variety of home-made analogue devices as well. They are
sometimes reminiscent of ZOVIET FRANCE. Maybe this wasn't the
time or place to totally appreciate their evident qualities
(we will see them again at the SPECTRE night in
Antwerp).
This
was followed by more COLD MEAT INDUSTRY , with DEUTSCH NEPAL. No
comments.
We
have more to say about AMBASSADOR 21, and their extreme
digital hard core which makes ATARI TEENAGE RIOT sound like
teen pop. So much rage and energy !
They
were positively beaming, and their set was pure pleasure.
While Alexeï posed in a punk aggressive way, Natacha was no
less than charismatic . The angry duet uses up the entire
stage, microphone in hand, while letting their machines
unleash the sonic maelström in the background. Alexeï
occasionally tampers with his machines, to work them into
incredible digital noise madness. No doubt these two are
possessed by a sacred flame, and they share it with the
audience with their sincerity and their obvious pleasure at
being on stage.
Another
great moment of MFest was undoubtedly CONTAGIOUS ORGASM and
his highly original and personal music, sometimes
experimental, but always maintaining an incredible sense of
structure. He wanders quite naturally from almost kitsch
glitch to powerful grooves, sometimes even white noise,
without ever loosing track. And he gets away with the most
facetious sonic experimentations. A fine demonstration of
daring subtlety. But
we expected that much, from continually listening to his
recordings at home.
To
end this third and last night, all meters were pushed to the
red, first with MORGENSTERN, a fine example of classic ANT-ZEN
rhythms with a sincerely awesome distorted sound, followed by
IMMINENT whose set verged more than ever on industrial techno;
AH-CAMA-SOTZ
festively ended the event with Jerôme Soudan from
MIMETIC and Sal-ocin from EMPUSAE pounding away on pads and
live percussion.
Here
are our on-the-spot impressions regarding this
festival which has year after year succeeded in becoming a
must among all the events labelled as "industrial" .
Last
but not least, we have to praise the perfect organisation, the
great partying audience who happily danced the nights away,
the numerous music stalls hosting the best labels of this
scene, the DJs who performed non-stop in the stall area, the
bar with its democratic prices, the restaurant with its fine
food selection (delicious cakes at 50 eurocents a piece, you
just can't beat that !), and the lounge area which is ideal to
chill out, chat and watch the cyber-goth
parade.
We're back for more next year, and that's
final!
