Storyteller, actress and Indian classical dancer, Flora Devi takes us into an enchanting world where demons lurk, animals talk, and the gods themselves leave their celestial abodes to take up both flute and sword.
Through her charm and talent, old and forgotten myths and legends from India and Asia come to life through the exaggerated mime, jewelled movement and intricate delicacy of Odissi dance. The canvas is splashed with colour, mystery and humour
The gaiety of the costumes, the music and rhythm of Odissi dance, the melodious voice, the facial expressions and postures all help to bring the public into this fantasy world of magic and celestial beauty.
The stories, taken from Indian mythology and folklore, are all accompanied by traditional music and Odissi, the dance of Orissa in north-east India. An ancient temple dance created more than 2,000 years ago, this expressive dance expects the dancer to also master the arts of mime and acting. It is a unique experience to witness the meeting of these different ways of expression.
In her show for children, Flora Devi invites them into an imaginary world through a guessing game: the children must guess the mudras (hand gestures) representing a bird, a flute, a fish ... And now is when the magic takes over so. Now the children themselves will fly with the birds, play the flute and dive with the fish. Now they are ready to discover the enchanting world of these faraway tales and legends.
The tale thus becomes a dance, a fragrance, a look, a laugh, an exchange........
