KOM-INTERN "UKUSA"
(Hands)
KOM-INTERN "Echelon"
(Hands)
Following
Lustmord's side project ARECIBO and Lagowski's SETI, now is
the time for our fellow KOM-INTERN to launch his own project
about planetary surveillance. But contrary to the statements
provided by the aforementioned, this time the cameras are
focused on us rather than the cosmos: this album is about
UKUSA, standing for United Kingdom and United States of
America, representing the large scrutinizing eyes of this
global version of Big Brother. The core of this conceptual
release is the Echelon Watch program, which covers the planet
in a tight network of inquisitive surveillance devices. Here's
something to fuel your paranoia!!
But
KOM INTERN doesn't just present us with another clever
concept; the drone/beat combination is intelligently used,
thus generating haunted tracks throbbing with cold, insidious
groove. This is highly addictive listening material, complete
with irresistible rhythms, scarce but judicious samples, deep
melodic layers, hypnotising crescendos and an impeccably
crafted structure. I would go as far as calling this work
perfect, since all of its components have been carefully and
meticulously assembled: every element is in its place, which
makes this album as effective as it is
indispensable.
To
conclude, I'll simply declare this release a masterpiece,
showing all the skills of its creator, his love of well made
work, and his intelligent assimilation of his musical
background. Fine art at its best, and an exceptional release
among the Hands catalogue. This CD comes in 2 different
versions, now a
customary feature
with Hands; I must recommend the limited box-set ,
containing, embedded in a nicely designed case, an additional
EP which proves as essential as the main CD both in terms of
quality and quantity, as it provides 30 minutes of extra music
and a CD-rom track.
Let
us praise Hands for their henceforth hosting of KomIntern;
After Mimetic moved in with Hands some time ago, Kom Intern is
the second French project on the German label, thus proving a
greater acknowledgement of our Gallic scene across the Rhine,
when this country was so far notoriously protective of its own
music.
Finally, for those who might
have overlooked the information, KOM-INTERN will appear at the
mandatory Maschinenfest in October, and this is bloody good
news !!
MOTHBOY "The fears" (Ad
Noiseam)
On passe aisément
insolente!
These
talented newcomers in the Dark-hop scene have just released
their first album on Ad Noiseam. This rather limited scene was
in desperate need for fresh blood: more energetic than SCORN
(their mentor), more subtle than TECHNO ANIMAL, MOTHBOY inject
appealing groove into their Dub, along with a jazzy
sensibility on a few tracks with most effective results. We
easily let ourselves be transported from industrial dub
rhythms to piano bar-like lounge atmospheres (Stuck in a
moment) and the jazz orchestra, with its real sax, banjo,
drums, harmonica, guitars and organs, occasionally joins in
joyful intercourse with the machines' lecherous groove. Mick
Harris himself, of all people, gives a hand on a couple of
tracks! The general feeling is altogether dark, powerful,
varied, and reminiscent of numerous cleverly used influences,
ranging from Basic Channel style techno to Meat Beat
Manifesto, from DJ Spooky's most inspired compositions to
Scorn's darkest dub.
This
recording is clearly intended for devoted fans of the genre,
but will also seduce those who favour music with insolence and
attitude.
CDATAKILL
"The Cursed Species" (AdNoiseam)
Pour "The
Most of the greatest figures
from the original wave of artists referred to as "breakcore"
have dropped the recurring gimmicks of this genre, in order to
"hybridize" their complex broken rhythmic patterns with other
major musical forms. And it's a good thing that they did, as
it would quickly have become tedious. Of course, hopes were
high with CDATAKILL. With "Paradise", they had focused on
darkness and (a demanding) fury, and created an epic and
magnificent album which was already moving on from the
standards of breakcore. "Brazilian Nightmare" was a long,
arrhythmic, dark ambient and introspective drone, which fully
revealed the versatile virtuosity of Zak Roberts
.
"The Cursed Species"
explores new territories again. Without any doubt, CDATAKILL
has reached a new maturity. Complex rhythms constitute of
course the core of this creation, an elaborate exoskeleton
supporting finely crafted compositions. Listen closely and
repeatedly to a gem like "Reclamation song": the falsely
binary beat intensifies and coils into round bass, as you're
being hypnotized by haunting, repetitive scrolls of sounds,
and on the last part of the track, just when you're beginning
to assume that the deed's done, some sampled Arabic chanting
gives the song its second wind, still more hypnotic: what
astonishing skill this shows. Without a single trace of
pretence, this track, in its evolution and conclusion
(infinity suggested through tenacious threnody), is a model of
its kind. By the way, what would Muslimgauze have sounded like
nowadays? This track might very well give us a good idea of
it.
Another significant instance
is « predatory behaviour », which takes us miles
away from the usual clichés of the genre. What kind of alchemy
does miraculously hold this monumental masterpiece together,
with its spiralled beats continuously hopping onwards, its old
school drones, and its (falsely) lo-fi but so enthralling
sound? This title is in fact a real pandemonium, an infernal
Pandora box which viciously locks around your
senses.
The variety of sounds used
to create this album also participates in the unique identity
of CDATAKILL. One could well be tempted to reduce these to
being simply old-school, but can the act of leaving behind the
current glitch and electronica tones be termed old school? In
this case the answer is clearly "no", and we can doubtlessly
state that far from dealing with some long extinct creature,
we're facing a rare, bizarre and hybrid species, as suggested
by Aurélien Police's splendid artwork.
DITHER
"Amek"
(M-Tronic)
Amek a
genre. Merci à DITHER pour ce supplément
d'âme !
Warp
and Skam had better be ready for this ! DITHER's new CD
has just been released. And
he's certainly no longer a challenger, his albums having
retentlessly made him into a cornerstone in the scene. Amek is
a masterpiece of sensitive and complex Electronica. It's
as if Dither's works possessed a little something which his
fellow composers lack, for
instance as if Autechre had suddenly discovered a soul, or
Gridlock had got rid of emphasis.
Here, and until the very end, the listener
is overwhelmed by a cleverly crafted melancholy, seeping
through almost lyrical, and sometimes even religious
tracks, which are composed (and the term is used here in
all its significance) and orchestrated around complex and
precise rhythms , along with inspiring melodic
patterns.
Amek
has got every asset to become one of the reference recordings
of the genre. Praise DITHER for
this additionnal hint of
soul and spirit.
